It wasn’t often that Mr. Vanderson traveled for work, being that working in realty in Sweetwater didn’t typically require sending him globetrotting as his previous career path did, but he had been gone for the last month and a half assisting on an archaeological dig in Europe at the request of a former colleague. While he most certainly enjoyed his time traveling and excavating, he was glad to be back home. So, Elijah had made phone calls leading up to his return to ask his children to be ready for a nice dinner, though he had been informed by Siobhan that she and Claire were going to be out of town, and West was, well; West. So he was only truly expecting to see Price Vanderson and Alexis Vanderson .
Elijah finished straightening the collar on his navy button-up shirt, it paired nicely with the gray suit he’d decided on, though opting to leave his jacket off as it wasn’t necessarily a ‘formal’ dinner. He also decided against a tie, he just wanted to relax for the evening and enjoy a little time with at least two of his children. His eldest son and daughter. Parents weren’t supposed to have favorites, and Elijah didn’t like to think of his eldest son as his ‘favorite’, but he did put a lot more time and effort into working with Price to prepare him for taking his place some day.
Elijah headed downstairs to his office to respond to a few emails while the catering staff set to work in the kitchen. Of course he’d pay to have a catered meal at home, he wasn’t about to spend all that time in the kitchen himself. Elijah poured himself a glass of scotch and tool a seat at his desk while awaiting the arrival of his children.

It had been weird to have their father gone for so long when they were so used to him being home. Alexis knew that her parents often found her to be rather disappointing for a child of theirs but that didn't stop her from continuing to try. So when he'd been on his way and made sure to inform them to be ready for a meal together, of course Alexis did all she could to impress him. Freshly showered and shaved, make up and hair to perfection, and a simple but pretty red dress that was perfect for her skin tone, she headed downstairs.
When she peeked in on the dining room and still found it empty she considered just sitting to wait but decided to go and see if her father was in his office first. If she could greet him before Price then it might even make her look particularly good. So knocked softly on his office door and if he allowed her to enter she'd open the door and peek inside. "Hi Daddy," she said sweetly. "I missed you. How was your trip?" she asked as she'd come in and move over to his desk.

Sitting at his desk Elijah had finished the emails and was about to start pouring his second glass of scotch when he heard the soft knock at his office door. “It’s open.” Elijah said, setting down the bottle and closing the work programs down as he looked to see Alexis Vanderson open the door and enter, a loving smile spread across his lips at the sight of his eldest daughter. She was an absolute vision in her little red dress. He stood from his seat and stepped around to give her a proper hug. While Elijah may not be the most open with his feelings, he adored his children.
“Hello darling, you look absolutely divine.” Elijah encouraged her to give a twirl for him as he leaned against the front of his desk. “My trip was quite exhausting, but I got to see some extraordinary pieces. And of course, I brought you back a gift…” He stepped to the bookcase on the far side of the room and picked up a delicate looking jewelry case. Elijah held up the little box before extending it for her to take. Inside she would find a lovely pair of Antique French 18ct Gold Dormeuse Earrings, just a little something he thought she might like. And quite the steal at only $772.

Alexis wrapped her arms around her dad's middle as he hugged her, squeezing him back tightly. She breathed in his familiar scent and felt glad that he was home. They didn't always agree on everything but it was usually better than only dealing with her mom. Alexis was far more of a daddy's girl and often butted heads more fiercely with her mom than with Elijah.
She practically melted at her father's praise, feeling the tension soften in her shoulders as he approved of how she looked tonight. She giggled prettily and spun in a little circle for him, showing off the pretty little dress. At the mention of a gift her eyes lit up and she clapped softly, bouncing on her heels as she moved over towards the bookcase with him. She accepted the box and opened it like the most delicate gift she'd ever received. She gasped when she opened it and laid her eyes on the earrings. "Oh daddy, they're beautiful," she squealed as she removed the earrings she was wearing and carefully pulled the news ones out of the box one by one to put them on.
She then lengthened her neck and made sure her hair was out of the way as she showed them to Elijah. "How do they look?"

Price wasn’t partaking of parental festivities just yet because he was busy climbing through his bedroom window. He would have just walked through the front door except he knew his dad was home and needed to keep up appearances. Being stoned wasn’t a great appearance.
There were tread marks on the window, as this sneakery was surely a hobby, so getting in wasn’t hard. He tripped on his foot and fell onto his floor, laughing, then slapping a hand over his mouth so no pesky sibling would come wandering in to investigate.
Price got up and stumbled to the bathroom, stripped naked and popped into the shower. He knew how to clean up well.

Elijah watched with adoration as Alexis twirled to show off her dress. She truly was a vision.while they might not always agree on things, he really did just want the best for his children. Which sometimes resulted in him making a complete ass of himself by showing off just what a ‘snob’ he could be. But tonight was about enjoying the company of his children that decided to show up, and catching up from his long trip.
The smile on his face at seeing her handle the little box so delicately and put the earrings on immediately was joined with a delighted sparkle to his eyes as he watched her model them. “My dear, you make everything look breathtaking.” Elijah praised with a nod, glad to see her enjoy the gift. He of course had brought home something for each of his children, he’d most likely just have the other gifts sent to their rooms for them to open at their leisure. He did hope to at least see Price join them tonight, he texted that he would try to make it. “So tell me, how has the start of the school year been so far?” He asked as he moved to sit in one of the reading chairs. Whenever the meal was ready they would be notified, so he was content to simply catch up with Alexis.

Alexis beamed at her father's praise. There was none better than it in the whole world. As he moved to sit down she moved towards him and sat down on the arm of the chair he was in, looking for any excuse to stay near him. She always missed him when he went away even if having home brought her more restrictions than when he wasn't. She still craved his attention and approval so much that having him close was always a comfort and relief to her. The slit on the skirt of her dress fell open in this position, exposing most of her thigh but she didn't even notice.
"Oh it's going so well, Daddy," she told him. "And this girl that was really mean to me just moved away so that's amazing too. Oh, I'm just so glad you're home, Daddy," she said with a beaming smile as she leaned in to press a kiss to his cheek.

Elijah didn’t mind when Alexis sat in the arm of his chair. For as long as he could remember, she seemed to prefer to be close to him. He could recall times when she was a tiny thing, no more than two, just determined to set on his lap if he was at his desk. The memory brought a smile to his lips and he gently looped an arm behind to help steady her, and was listening intently as she spoke. Elijah couldn’t recall that last time he’d gotten to enjoy such a nice bit of time with his elder daughter.
“I can’t imagine his sad one’s life must be to want to pick on my wonderful daughter, but I’m glad to hear she’s relocated and things are starting off well for you my Dear.” Elijah beamed proudly at her. He knew they weren’t always on the same page, but Alexis would always be his little girl. He might have been hard on her, but it was because she could do no wrong in his eyes, so he needed to push her to be better so she didn’t turn out like her mother. “Are you still cheerleading this year?”

Alexis smiled to herself as she thought about Bethany and how she was now gone. She wouldn't admit to her father that part of the reason she hated the girl was because she was so close to Ellis D, a boyfriend he hadn't been thrilled about. Not that they were together anymore anyway so it shouldn't matter but it did. She hated Bethany hanging around him and was so delighted she was gone now.
She loved the feeling of his arm steadying her. It was such a comforting feeling and one she missed. She really was quite attached to her daddy. Her mother was silly not to be more obsessed with him. "Of course, daddy!" she said proudly. "I know I'm not Captain anymore," she said with an embarrassed blush which she disguised by wrapping her arm around his shoulders while they talked, putting his face unintentionally at boob level. "But I think I could still get a scholarship with my cheerleading. Not that I really want to leave Sweetwater," she admitted.

Elijah listened as she spoke, though he cleared his throat a bit as she seemed to be rather comfortable with her body. He couldn’t deny his little girl had grown into quite the stunning young woman. Which naturally stirred his protective instincts as a father. He only slightly shifted in the seat so he could look up at her properly, with a raised brow. “I have no doubt about it, any scout would be a moron to not take note of your skill.” He encouraged her with a nod. While he might not have been able to be at every event, he made an effort to attend as many of her cheerleading functions as he could to show his support whenever he was home.
Elijah knew that often times the majority of his attention seemed to fall on Price, helping prepare him for handling family finances and businesses, but Alexis’ need for his attention and approval wasn’t lost on him. “Wherever you want to go to school, I will gladly make it happen. And while I’d love for you to remain close to home, I would understand if you chose elsewhere.” Part of him almost wished she would, even if only to get her out of this small town. But a larger part of him wanted to keep his little girl as close as he could, for as long as he could.

Price pulled a simple blue cotton shirt over some jeans and headed for the stairs. He caught the sound of conversation coming from his father’s office, and rolled his eyes before changing course. Passing West Vanderson’s bedroom door, he rapped both fists on it loudly, assuming his younger brother was sleeping.
“Wakey wakey for ass kissing time.” He called to sweet in a pitchy, mocking voice. Neither of them were good at schmoozing, thought certainly Price more than West. None could compete with their brown-nosing little sister.
Without waiting for his brother—who knew if he was even in there?—Price went to the office. He’d lean on the doorway upon arriving, covering a scowl with a smile.
“Shall we go eat?” He definitely wanted to break up whatever this was. As of now the siblings didn’t rat each other out, but if one of them was to do it then it would be her.

West was sprawled across his bed wearing his clothes from the day before. He reeked of alcohol from a party into the early hours of the morning and was soaked in sweat.
He groaned at the sharp knocking on his door, rolling over and blindly searching for something to throw at his door. Which happened to just be a pillow that didn't make it. The scratchy high-pitched voice confirmed it was Price at least and not his mother come to chide him for missing classes again. "Fuck," he groaned, picking himself up. He'd hadn't forgotten their father was coming home tonight. He'd just decided to ignore the texts and phone calls because he didn't care.
But the headache from his dear older brother's unceremonious evening wake-up call meant he wasn't going back to sleep. West untangled himself from his sheets and stepped into the bathroom, stripping out of his stained clothes and exchanging them for clean ones - another set of nice jeans, graphic shirt and a jacket that didn't match - without bothering to shower. Let dear old Dad say what he wanted.
West stumbled downstairs, hair in shambles, and paused next to his brother at the door, glancing over the scene of Alexis practically glowing and their father hanging on every word. He made a noise of disgust in his throat and then continued to the kitchen to see what he could do about his hangover.

It was with a disappointed scrunch of her nose that Price showed up at the door, soon followed by West looking definitely worse for wear. She rolled her eyes at his sound of disgust then sighed and stood up from the arm of the chair. At least she got a few minutes of his undivided attention. "Ready Dad?" she asked before walking over towards the doorway. She tossed a half glare at Price and stuck out her tongue. They weren't the best of friends but they weren't exactly enemies either. At least Alexis didn't think so. While Price was annoying as hell, he was also fun to have around at parties. Honestly so was West in his own way.
They all had bad partying habits and things were decent when they were being bad together. It was when they had to put on the proper fronts that things started to really far apart. Or that's how Alexis saw it.

Elijah was glad to see not just Price but even West, though he looked a bit rough. He rolled his eyes and gave a nod to Alexis as he stood. “Of course, the catering staff should have every thing ready by now.” Because nothing said ‘family dinner’ like it being fully catered and served. That was typical for the Vanderson’s. He followed Alexis to the door and gave a nod to Price as he gripped his shoulder with a raised brow.
“How are classes going?” He asked his eldest son, though he didn’t just stay in one place, he continued to lead the way toward their formal dinning room when the catering staff was buzzing about to get their table finished being set. He didn’t see West, so he shook his head and poked his head through the door to the kitchen. “You don’t have to stay and join us, but there’s plenty of food out here if you need something to fight your hangover.” There was a clear tone of distaste in his words to West as he shut the door and pulled out a chair for Alexis.

“You barely tried.” Price murmured as West Vanderson joined him in the doorway, smirking and shaking his head, an amused observation rather than a complaint. West’s failure to thrive provided the perfect distraction for both Price and Alexis, so really he didn’t wish any differently for his brother.
Father’s attention on him was something he easily knew how to manipulate. Price smiled becomingly.
“Come on, dad, is that even a question?” Price was notorious for his impossibly good grades. He was a smart cookie—both when he did the work himself and when he paid other people to do it.
“How’s work?” He countered. It was easier to let dad talk about himself.
