A strange history surrounds the town, it is a place where mysterious and supernatural things have been known to happen. The reputation of the town reguarly draws in visitors and newcomers alike. While some residents avidly believe in the supernatural, others are far more skeptical. What do you believe?

For a moment there Ellis D. saw something: hope. He could cling to his pride and clam up, ignoring the opportunity...but he would hate himself for it forever.
He turned to look at Alexis, softened his expression—in fact, let it show his sorrow—and reached a hand across the table, willing her to take it.
“You do make me happy. You’re the only person in this world that makes me happy, Lex. Please.” He opened his hand. “Please don’t do this.”

Guilt ripped her open. She felt sorrow and the stirrings of resentment. Was that true? Was she really the only thing that brought him happiness and she was selfishly taking that away from him. She was a spoiled, rich girl, yes. But she has a giving heart, not a selfish one. Usually.
Or was he just guilt tripping her to convince her to stay? And he made her happy too. He had been there for her countless times when others had not. He had always been someone she could depend on. But lately...she hated who he was hanging out, hated that he was smoking, hated that he felt so far away even when they were together.
She wanted to take his hand. She wanted to curled up against him and bury herself in his chest, to feel his strong arms wrapped around her. But it would be worse if she gave in, even just a little. “Please don’t make this harder than it already is,” she said, her voice cracking.

The sliver of hope was a false one. Alexis wasn’t wavering on her resolve. She was just wording herself poorly. Ellis D. thought he’d seen doubt, but clearly she was resolved. He pulled his hand back in, and it would be the last time he extended it for her.
“Okay.” He said, shaking his head, the sadness on his face hardening once more. “Don’t make it hard. I guess something like this should be easy.” He nodded his head, adding to his sarcasm. His eyes found the window again.
Alexis knew him well enough to know that this was what he did when he was hurt. He clammed up and shut down, not giving those around him the satisfaction of seeing him hurting. He’d only let her see a handful of times, usually after his mother said things, or when times were particularly rough. He’d bury his face into her chest and cry silently as she stroked his head. Just a handful of times, but from his perspective he’d bore his soul. And now she was rejecting him and his soul.
Another thing Alexis knew was that Ellis D.’s repressed hurt turned aggressive. He wouldn’t do anything here, but he’d likely get in a fight with someone—anyone—later, or destroy property that wasn’t his. He was, at his core, a hooligan, wasn’t he?

She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t stand to see him hurting like this, in his own protective way. Especially when it was her causing the hurt. But what could she do? There was so much outside pressure that she very much had a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ mentality. And as much as she loved Ellis D., family was forever. She was stuck with them so doing what that wanted her to in this case seemed like the smartest option.
Silent tears fell down her cheeks at his words and she wiped them away with the back of her hand. She stood and moved to him as she made an attempt to put her hand on his shoulder and spoke whether he let her do it or not. “Good bye, D.” She moved to press a departing kiss to the top of his head and then began to step away.

Ellis D. saw her wipe her face from the corner of his eyes. He hated to see her cry, but he was also envious that she could show her emotion. We’re he to cry, his manhood would be challenged. And oh, how he wanted to cry.
He didn’t say goodbye. This wasn’t goodbye, as far as he was concerned. He let her touch him, let her kiss him, and kept his eyes fixed out the window.
