As noble as her sentiment was, Ferris had never known a woman for which that was true. Murphy had loved things. She had accepted spending time with him instead of things, but he'd pick up rather quickly that holidays and birthdays, he had better come prepared. But he'd fallen out of habit after five years. He hadn't even planned anything for his niece and nephews beyond the standard college fund money and that was no fun. Ferris might win the fun uncle award by default of being the only uncle, but he did like to try to be worthy of it.
Her asking questions while he fumbled for his keys only made the process take longer. Even if it was an important question. "I..." he had to stop and think, staring at the side of his truck. He belatedly remembered to lock the truck, hold down the unlock to remote start it and then unlock it again before putting away the keys. "I did. Put two in the uh...the glovebox the other day." The same one with his stash and his handgun. Maybe not the best combination of items all in one place.
He reached up and opened the door for the back of the cab. It being his own truck, he felt a little more comfortable and confident about hoisting himself up. It also helped that there were steps for that sort of thing, ones which he normally never used and had to stare down at to align his feet correctly, but he did manage to lift himself up into the seat with a groan. He shifted over and then half climbed over the seat to turn on the seat warmers and then open the glovebox. Two plastic wrapped condoms, right on top. He leaned back, no bothering to close the compartment and held it up to Darcy triumphantly. "Honestly couldn't remember if I did," he said with a laugh.
The closer they got to his vehicle, the more Darcy’s better judgement fought to kick in. Despite whatever angle her late night brain was pushing, this wasn’t okay. Sure they had an understanding, but that didn’t override someone’s ability to actually give consent. Especially not like this. This didn’t feel exciting like she thought it would, it just felt… wrong. And sure, as a fuck buddy she shouldnt care. But she did. Because he was more to her than that.
She couldn’t even admit it verbally yet, but she knew she had imprinted on him. And any part of her that might have found this exciting and thrilling, was shut down by the overwhelming and confusing feelings of both love and desire. But not the type of desire that was often responsible for lust. It was a desire to just be near him; sexual or not.
This was most definitely a first, and she felt a bit embarrassed, especially as he climbed into the back seat and even went as far as to get into the glove compartment for the condom. With the compartment open, she saw the bottle of the painkillers and just further cemented her decision to cool things off for the night. Darcy stepped up and gave an amused smile before pushing the back door shut and climbing into the driver seat, adjusting it to accommodate her size and pausing briefly to buckle Ferris in on of the seatbelts.
“I figured it made more sense to drive your truck to my place, that way you can head out on your own terms when you rest and sober up. I can easily get back to my truck or send a friend to pick it up.” She admitted, taking the condom out of his hand and setting it back in the glove compartment, though eyeing the pills another moment before closing it. “I need you to be honest with me Ferris… do I need to worry about these pills being in here?” She hadn’t intended to go full parent mode, but she couldn’t help but be concerned. Especially since he had allowed himself to be seen in this condition at work, and that seemed very out of character for him.
The fall had to hurt, because Ferris cared about his job and wouldn’t jeopardize his career… right? She didn’t wait to see his reaction before she put the vehicle to use and headed for the trailer park.

Ferris expected Darcy to climb in beside him, so he was only more confused when she not only didn't but closed the door on him. He struggled to put the pieces together with what was happening even as she climbed into the front seat and moved his chair and then half climbed over him to belt him in. He pursed his lips as she took the condom and put it back. "I know you have a patch and you feel fantastic...I'd feel better if we use a condom," he noted. "You haven't missed a period since last time, right?" Last time had been a few days ago, which for all he knew was long enough.
Her words finally caught and made some sense. "So...this is kidnapping." With his keys in his pocket, that was close enough for his truck to start properly. "Never been kidnapped before," Ferris mumbled as she asked a much more serious question.
He shook his head. She hadn't worried about them in the forest, why should she worry now? "I said it hurt and they gave me fucking off brand Tylenol," he grumbled. "No arguing with a nurse who looks at an x-ray machine and sees you haven't broken anything," he sighed. More of that old phantom pain bullshit. But he wasn't lying about it. He leaned back and look up at her in the rearview mirror, that concerned look in her eyes registering a little. "I know I fucked up. I thought everyone would be asleep." And yeah, two was overboard. So maybe it was a little worrying.
The sudden mention of their unprotected encounter the other night made her flush red straight to her chest. Her grip slightly tightened on the steering wheel as she took a steadying breath. “While I appreciate the concern, I’ve had nothing happen to make me worry about my birth control being ineffective. But I’ll keep you posted.” She gave a tight lipped smile, not quite sure what else to say to that.
She wanted kids, sure. But maybe not exactly right now… plus, there was the whole conversation she’d need to eventually have explaining to her best friend that “oh yeah, by the way; no pressure or anything, but my werewolf side imprinted on you and I’m irrevocably in love with you”, yeah pass. She’d rather lose her right hand than to have that conversation anytime soon.
And then he was talking about being kidnapped. She chuckled now, shaking her head as she red tones softened. “You’re the first person I’ve ever kidnapped, so it’s new to me as well.” She teased, exhaling softly as she made a few turns, glancing back at him via the rearview mirror.
“Hey… pain is pain. It demands to be felt. You fell, you’re hurt; I believe you.” She made sure to let him know she was on his side, she wasn’t trying to be problematic. She just cared. “You know you’re body better than any nurse or doctor when it comes to pain and pain management. If they didn’t take your pain seriously and wanted to insist on over the counter medication, I believe that you did what you felt necessary for how to handle your pain. And I believe that you thought the guys would be asleep.”
A few more turns and they were pulling into the drive to her little home. It wasn’t large or overly flashy outside, though it was lit up with some elegant LED icicle lights on the little front porch. An inflatable penguin with a Santa hat at the base of the steps. She parked the vehicle and adjusted his seat back to normal for his height, then slipped out of the driver seat and opened the back door. “I’m also really, really glad you texted me. This way the guys can rest and you’re safe too.” She stepped up and offered him on of her hands after clicking the seatbelt release.

"Great," he said simply, giving a nod. While he had been very concerned, Ferris hadn't wanted to make a while thing of it that night. Not when Darcy had seemed so relaxed about it. But just having her directly answer his question with that confidence was reassuring enough.
Ferris rested a hand on the passenger seat, feeling a little physically uncomfortable on one of the turns. He wasn't used to someone else driving his truck. Or sitting in the back seat. No o 3 had ever driven it but him but he didn't feel all that weird about it. Darcy had a way cooler truck than he did. He trusted her.
"Thanks, Darcy" he said. "Wish the nurses felt that way." He was pretty sure Valkyrie would have believed him. But he was actually relieved she hadn't been working. He smiled awkwardly at Darcy as she reassured him. Ferris still believed he had fucked up, but having someone remind him he was just trying to take care of himself helped. "Probably shouldn't keep them in my truck though," he admitted. Or anywhere. "I've a shitty track record."
He looked up at the passing lights and decorations of the trailers. It wasn't a part of town he visited often but he did get excited suddenly at the prospect of seeing Darcy's place. Not that she hadn't said as much multiple times. He had the decency to blush as she talked about him being safe. "I only did it cause I thought you would be asleep," he admitted. Not that he knew why. Never in a million years had he expected her to answer. "Especially how I hung up on you. That's just gonna be a thing," he explained, letting her help him out his truck. He braced himself on the car and looked over her decorations.
"Should have known you were Christmas gal," he noted. He reached for his keys to lock his truck and his fingers brushed against the pack of smokes. Right. Now he needed those. He pulled one out with some trouble and struggled to get the lighter to take.
His thanks were given a nod with a slight shrug. Sometimes it was just nice to know someone heard your plight, and let you know you weren’t crazy. She knew plenty of times when Rhett did that for her. Though she mostly avoided hospitals as a rule of thumb. X-rays would show so much scar tissue from breaks and fractures that she couldn’t explain to any human nurse or doctor. Which is why typically they handled all medical issues in pack. It was also why most pack members had at least basic first aid skills by their early twenties.
She raised a brow, but decided to put a pin in the question. At least until they were no longer in the vehicle. She chuckled at his light blush and response. Of course he had assumed she’d be asleep. And had she been on the schedule for the next day she might have. Though, eleven texts in a row would have woken her up even then. “What can I say, I like the calm and quiet of late nights and early mornings.” She said in an almost dreamy tone. Then shrugged. “Hey, you’re a freakin’ firefighter; dropped phone calls are the last thing I’m worried about.” She teased with a wink as she helped him out of the backseat of the truck.
His comment caught her off guard and she looked at the simple decor, a hint of sadness in those dark eyes that she quickly blinked away. Taking the lighter from him, giving it a little shake and shielding it with her free hand to give him a flame for his cancer stick. “It’s actually the first time I’ve decorated this place… seasonal holiday decor isn’t typically something easy to keep up with when traveling. Just takes up too much valuable space.”

Ferris was zero for three on his nightly bingo card. He would be beyond embarrassed to learn just how many texts h3 had sent her in a row. But he was glad she had been awake and answered. Texting her kept him distracted. Even if it wasn't good for his probably not a concussion. "Still should have said it might happen. Don't mean to make you panic." He had no idea how much she worried about him when hearing the sirens.
"It looks good. I like the...fuck, whatever you call those," he said gesturing to the lights dangling from the roof. He started slightly when Darcy grabbed the lighter but offered a soft thanks, using the flame to light his cigarette before leaning back against the truck and taking a few quick inhales. "Fucking cold out here," he grumbl3d, trying to blow through his addiction quickly. "Haven't you been here a few years? Why only now? Also. Shit, are your neighbors your pack mates?" He asked, glancing around at all the nearby trailers. "That's dope," he added.
Ferris took a few more breaths of smoke and then stamped out the cigarette, picking it up and setting it with a few others in a tray in his truck.
“It’s all good, I’m a big girl; I can handle dropped calls for emergency responses.” She chose not to touch on just exactly her level of panic or tension when knowing he was out on a call. It was his job afterall, if her wolf wanted to pick a Chief of the firefighters, she’d also have to deal with the fact that he’s constantly in potentially dangerous situations. Instead, she just offered a half smile.
“Icicle lights?” Darcy offered, looking at the porch lights with a smile. She wasn’t big of all the colorful crazy lights, but icicle lights… they were beautiful. So naturally she had them on her quaint little porch. After the cigarette was lit, she offered him back the lighter. The cold didn’t bother her, she actually liked the slight sting when the cold air hit her lungs. The way she could see her breath with every exhale.
“Because with pack tensions, I never knew if I would be here long enough to warrant buying any decorations… I finally caved this year. Some of them are, some are just townsfolk.” Darcy gave a gentle shrug as she watched him curiously, then took his arm back over her shoulders to guide him first up the porch steps, and then paused at the door to open it.
The door led straight into the living room, furniture only slight altered to accommodate a modestly decorated tree, but it was a real tree; not a fake one. The floor plan was simple; a one bedroom, one bath with an open concept living space, the kitchen only ‘sectioned’ off from the living room because of countertop/bar.
“Welcome to my home.” She offered softly as she helped him inside, pausing at the bar to set down her phone and car keys and then remembered she also had his phone in her pocket. “Oh, I almost forgot I had this.” She pulled it out and offered the device to him as she pulled the door shut behind them.

"What about dropped emergency responders? I hear those are much more problematic." Who the hell was speaking right now? Someone far more clever but with just as dark a humor as Ferris. He chuckled around his cigarette and that led into some heavier coughing. "Okay, maybe too soon."
He nodded at her help. Icicles. He was going to stay stalactites and knew that was wrong. They looked lovely. Like she was. He was still a little sore over her lying to him about sex in his truck, even if he knew he shouldn't be.
Ferris still managed to stumble up the steps, half coughing into his sleeve and then also finding his lack of coordination hilarious so he laughed and then coughed more. "Fuck smoking, eh?" He wheezed. He certainly felt that way yet here he was, thoroughly invested.
He stood just inside the door, admiring her cozy home. It was cozier than hers, both from a space standpoint but also a 'someone lives here'standpoint. And it wasn't just the Christmas tree. He put a hand to the wall as she abandoned him, using it to awkwardly slip off his boots and then she'd his jacket to the floor. He looked down at it with a blank expression and then shrugged.
"Lovely. Very you." He accepted his phone and immediately placed it on the table beside her things. "So...technically even without a concussion shouldn't be looking at screens," Ferris said awkwardly. Like he hadn't texted her for half an hour. "Also, where's your bathroom? I need to piss."
Once he got directions, thankfull not far, he padded that way, not managing to close the door behind him as he stumbled to his knees at the bowl and vomited into it. He groaned and leaned against the wall, closing his eyes and trying to catch his breath. Nothing quite like visiting your friends place for the first time and throwing up in their bathroom.
“Oooh, someone’s feeling cheeky.” She teased, curls bouncing as she shook her head. “Can’t say I’ve got a lot of experience with that, but I’d like to think I’m mostly handling things well.” Her shoulders shifted to shrug, and she resisted the urge to admit how just the idea of him being hurt made her incredibly nauseous. But there was a certain sense of relief that came from having him there, because she knew she wouldn’t let anything further happen to him.
His bouts of coughing, either from the cold or the smoking, at least seemed a touch more ‘normal’ than anything else. She gently nodded at his general amusement from his lack of coordination. Why did she find him completely adorable in this state? Was it his general lack of holding back or his ability to filter himself accordingly? Whatever the case, she was suddenly glad she had indeed been awake when his texts rolled in.
Darcy looked up with a raised brow at his comment, looking around her place with a soft smile. That it was. She still hadn’t gotten around to painting anything to colors more her preference, but she finally had a space that she had made her own. Little things that just screamed it belonged to her; an assortment of rolled maps leaning in the corner of the room near the tv with a hiking pack and one of her work hats. The coffee table had the photo album and sketchbook, along with her assortment of remotes. Her scent seemed to engulf everything in her home, a mixture of whiskey and jasmine.
A small shelf under the tv held a small collection of movies, the majority of which were musicals and classics. The artwork on the walls consisted of framed photos from places she’d been, pictures with friends and pack members, and a few family members. A lot of the older pictures she featured in, so did Rhett. For seven years he’d been the closest thing she had to a best friend, and making Alpha changed that. Most of her recent photos seemed to be more of landscapes and less with people.
“Left past the kitchen, and another left.” She pointed as she slipped of her coat and hung it on the back of her door and slipped her shoes off at the corner of the bar, running a hand through her hair as she stepped to her fridge to grab out a bottle of water, thinking it best to grab him one as well. Especially at the sound of him throwing up. That was never a good sign after a fall.
Darcy wandered to the hallway, leaning against doorframe outside the bathroom. “Hey, are you good in there?” She called out softly, peaking in from the opened door, the concern on her face clear as day. She didn’t have a very good poker face, standing in the doorway in her oversized green flannel, jeans and very messy curls, two water bottles in hand; her dark brown eyes couldn’t help but relay the concern she felt.

The lack of wall coverage was a bit odd, but it screamed Darcy's desire to paint. He noticed all her work attire and other hiking gear along with some of the maps that were ready to jump onto the wall. It gave him a much better idea for a gift than just another bottle of whiskey to sit in line with the collection on the bar. The rest of the pictures were glossed over in his rush to make himself much better acquainted with her bathroom. Even here reminded him of her. Between the feminine products and candles and the color of the hand towels. It smelled like her.
Ferris groaned softly. “Would you believe me if I said ‘yes?’” he asked, decently sure about what her answer would be. He would pause and wait for it before following up. “Don't ask if you don't want to know,” he chided gently, though far from upset. He was pretty sure he wasn't okay. But at this point, it was rather difficult to know what symptoms and side effects belonged to what cause.
He opened his eyes and managed to meet Darcy's concerned expression. “On the upside, I have room for dinner. Or would it be breakfast?” he asked, looking at his watch. Early AM still. So really neither. “Water is exactly what I wanted for Christmas, actually,” he added.
“I mean… I could pretend to if it made you feel better. But honestly; no.” She exhaled softly, fingers gently tracing along the exterior of the plastic water bottles as she listened to him. “Well, I do want to know. Can’t help you otherwise.” She rolled eyes a little as she watched him turn to look at her.
Shaking her head, she stepped inside and offered him one of the bottles, moving to sit on the edge of the tiled bathtub, opening her own bottle and taking a drink and setting it down on the edge beside her as she watched him. “Well, I know you like breakfast foods… I don’t mind whipping something together, but do you want to eat right now?”

"Normally I like the charade where we all pretend I'm normal but maybe I allow you to give it a rest for the night," he said, breathing slowly. He smiled. "And I appreciate that you care."
He was prepared to say a lot more scathing things about himself but then Darcy joined him in the small space and stuck the water bottle in his face. Ferris took it and unscrewed the top, taking a sip to rinse out his mouth before spitting that into the toilet. He hesitated but didn't feel the need to make any further space in his digestive system, so he reached up and pulled the lever to flush. He leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes, drinking a few swallows. He hesitantly wanted a shower, but he didn't have any other clothes.
He shook his head slowly. "No. Thanks." Ferris attempted to pick himself up with the help of the wall, wincing as he pressed against his bad shoulder. "I think..." he managed to get to his feet, setting the bottle on the sink. He didn't feel dizzy. "I think I'm gonna have tomorrow off. And the day after," he noted with a chuckle. Despite Darcy's presence, he undid his pants and lifted the seat so that he could, in fact, piss. A lot. The water was a very good idea.
Once he finished, he washed his hands and closed the toilet. If she was still there, he would offer an awkward smile that made it clear he only just now realized maybe he shouldn't have done that. But it wasn't anything she hadn't seen.
“Hey, it’s not like anyone else is here to give you grief over it.” She offered with a slight nod, then cleared her throat a little to try and avoid the rosy blush creeping into her cheeks, not quite sure how to respond without sounding all ‘mushy’ and emotional. So she just ran a hand through her hair and tried not to look too embarrassed.
He took the bottle of water and rinsed out his mouth, flushing the toilet and began to push himself back up. She raised a brow as he spoke and she nodded a little. “That’s probably for the best, can’t go back to work when you’re not yourself.” She offered with a light shrug, then picked up her bottle of water and was about to take a sip when she realized he was now unzipping his pants.
It was one thing to see him in all his naked glory when they were aiming to fool around and have fun. This was definitely not the same. Darcy blushed clear to her ears and turned her gaze down, feeling a little awkward. He had said he needed to piss, she was the one who wandered into the bathroom after hearing him get sick. It’s not like he invited her in. It wasn’t until he was finished and washing his hands that she ventured to glance back up atop him and shook her head a little as his awkward smile. Why did that smile just get her?
“You’re terrible.” She gave his chest a playful poke as she stepped past him and back out to the living room.

Ferris gave her a pointed look to suggest that she was here to give him grief about it. But that was probably a good thing.
He honestly wasn't sure how to take being called terrible. Ferris knew she was joking. Probably. Either way, he did sort of deserve it, dropping his guard and his pants like that. He'd just...forgot? Somehow. He wasn't sure how else to explain himself. He stood in the bathroom for a moment and then stepped back into the hall, glancing left and right. Probably her bedroom to the left, since the right was the kitchen and table. He trailed a hand on the wall just in case, paused at the end of the bar top and set down his water as he surveyed her collection of spirits.
"I'm not really terrible, right?" he felt really stupid for asking but it was important. Maybe he wouldn't remember all of this later. That would probably be for the best. He wasn't sure of half of what he had said to Darcy or to Ethan and it had only really been an hour since everything kicked in. Ferris leaned a bit more heavily against the counter. "Can I sit down?" He wasn't sure why he felt the need to ask first.
