A set of soft grey, perfectly manicured nails clicked softly against a countertop as she clicked around the mouse to the computer screen at her desk. Checking returned books back in and making notes of any late material still due. The light tapping ceased as the woman gave a soft sigh and scooped up the books from the counter. Her petite 5’5” frame almost floating from shelf to shelf as she quietly returned the books to their locations. An emerald green dress fit to her lithe frame, paired with a black blazer and a pair of flats that complimented her dress, had been the outfit of choice along with a smokey but soft make-up look for the day. A statement piece for a necklace just to add a little flare to the ensemble.
Hal walked wordlessly through the library, collecting discarded books as students and townies milled about, lingering gazes in her direction not lost on her. She knew the effect she had on people, and she rather enjoyed it. Humans were fun little playthings, and she met them from all walks of life working in the Hollifield Library. Did she occasionally take advantage of her skills in persuasion? Yes. But what was the point of having this talent and not using it. She moved a rolling ladder to put a few books away near the top shelf, light brown eyes spotting students at the desk.
“The books are due back in three weeks, good luck on the test.” Her voice soft and melodic, though clearly English was not her native tongue. She gave a polite smile as the teen seemed to blush and returned to stand at her desk, clicking to send out notices reminding students of their late rentals and such.

Delaney was a very good student. She worked hard, studied hard, and got good grades. She also got tired of studying at home with her parents constantly looking over her shoulder so she recently started going to the library more often just so she could study in peace without added pressure. Today though she found herself distracted. Her mind on other things, she stepped away from her school books and started to wander around the library. A few books about the sea caught her attention as well as a book about mythological creatures. Out of curiosity she picked it up and started to thumb through it.
Interest peaked she made her way over to the front desk with the intent to ask if there were other books of this nature but when she reached the desk and looked up at the woman there she forgot her question entirely. She stared, her dark brown eyes reflecting light from the room. It was not the same kind of flustered reactions from other people who had interacted with the librarian. This was different, because Delaney immediately knew that this woman was just like her. It wasn't anything about her appearance, merely some instinct that drew people like them together.
Delaney had never met another siren besides her own mother and her cheeks flushed with the nerves of not knowing what to say. "Um-" she fumbled for words but whatever she was going to ask was entirely out the window.

Hal hadn’t been around another siren since her mother went her separate way, though she knew she wasn’t alone in Sweetwater. She’d just not come face to face with them… until now. Her dark brown eyes took in the young teenager before her and she couldn’t help but smile. She was such a young thing!
Her eyes fell upon the book in her hands and she raised a brow. “I like that one, though it could use a revision to update some facts about certain creatures.” She said softly, her interest in her work completely gone at this point in time. As much as Hal liked to tell herself she was fine on her own, she missed the familiarity and companionship to be shared with other sirens. Plus, she met so few in recent years it was always interesting to feel that pull… it made her miss her own mother. The woman was wild and quite reckless, it was no wonder Hal turned out as she did.
Those brown eyes scanned the area before she leaned forward on the desk and extended a hand. “I’m Halah, but please; call me Hal.”

It took Delaney a moment to realize what the woman was talking about and finally looked down at the book in her hand. "I found it quite lacking too," she said, her cheeks still a soft pink. She briefly glanced around them to make sure no one was close enough to hear. Her mother had always warned her about how serious it was to keep their true identity a secret and Delaney had never been sure if there was a real threat or if her mom was just being overprotective but regardless, she'd taken the warning to heart.
"I'm Delaney," she introduced herself. "It's so, so wonderful to meet you, Hal. I-I've never met anyone else like me before. Well, besides my mom," she admitted, shyly tucking a piece of hair behind her ear.

Hal gave an amused smile, nodding and then raised a brow. “If you’re interested in a decent read, I recommend ‘Woman’s Lore’ by Sarah Clegg, it just came out last year so we have yet to add it to our collection here; but I found it quite fascinating.” Of course, Hal was a sucker for any book on mythological creatures and not merely books on her own kind. “I think the author might have been a touch inspired while writing.”
After giving her delicate hand a shake, Hal might have held the younger girl’s hand a touch longer than ‘necessary’, but she couldn’t help it. It had been a few years since her last encounter with another Siren and she was quite intrigued to know about this girl. Especially hearing Delaney mention her mother. It made Hal miss her own mother.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Delaney.” She said softly, giving a nod to one of the groups of students milling about for a table to study at before she let her brown eyes return to the girl. “My mother and I used to travel together, but I haven’t met another person like us in a few years.” There was a twinkle to her brown eyes that relayed her excitement. While her mother had preferred the company of humans to other sirens; Hal craved that sense of community that could only be found with those like her. Especially when out for a swim.
