Humming and sounds of shears clipping and snipping away could be heard down the hall of the large Bartlett family home, despite the home being a remodeled ‘farm house’ it boasted large rooms and surprisingly large closets. Upon entering this particular room, one would seen various potted plants on desk and table surfaces, not to mention on the corner shelves or hanging around the window in macrame hangers. A beautiful dream catcher hung on the walls above the bed, interwoven with beautiful beadwork and a stunning almost ‘floral’ pattern in the weave. The humming came from the decent sized walk-in closet, which aside from housing the wardrobe and shoe collection of a teenage girl; also had a decent size ‘grow-tent’. It wasn’t uncommon or odd to find something of this nature in the eldest Bartlett daughter’s room, what with her knack for plants and growing things. But this specific project wasn’t one she boasted of to just anyone, though she knew her sister would enjoy it!
On her knees, her torso mostly inside the grow tent, Callie Bartlett set to work clipping away the excess leaves and tending to a decent size marijuana plant. It was clear she was hard at work on this project, and for those familiar with the scent; they could easily pick up on the smell while the tent door was open. Callie generally planned her time spent working on this project for periods when her parents wouldn’t be home, it wasn’t exactly something she knew they’d be ‘proud’ of her growing. She chuckled a little as she set the shears down and leaned back to admire her work. It was nearing it’s flowering stage, which meant sticking to her schedule on when it gets full light and when it needs to be kept in the dark. She grabbed her phone and snapped a photo, sending it to her sister Kota’s Snapchat with the caption “you should see her in person!” She pressed ‘send’ and tucked the phone back into her pocket as she adjusted the ventilation system (a dryer vent coil) to properly connect to a spot at her circle window she had added to the exterior wall of her closet. Thankfully her parents supported her green thumb, so they never questioned what she was working on. They just let her have her privacy and space to grow, and boy did Callie take full advantage of that!

Kota was smoking at the old tree house in the edge of the property listening to music when her sister sent her a snap she snapped one back with the caption 'nice omw' which she also verbally said aloud too. Send. Now the whole ritual of covering her ass first step was the change if clothes she kept in te tree house so she changed. Then it was eye drops to clear the red eyes (didn't help with the glassy look sometimes though). Next she put all her grass away (she didn't need a dealer or connect when Callie had the green thumb) then stashed her lock box in a loose wall panel that Daddy never fixed before the kids got to old for the old tree house. Hand sanitizer and perfume. Ritual complete.
She climbed down the old wooden ladder where she met Otis and Othello her twin hunting dogs, they always laid down waiting for Kota when she had her smoke sessions. The Bartlett family stoner took off in a jog across the yard with them in a happy tow and they won standing on the porch by the time Kota got there and she let them in (Dad would put them out later).
Kota removed her ear buds and went straight to her sisters hide away pot operation.
"hello dork," she politely greeted Callie but she was hammering out a text to Delaney Arquette about what she as doing after work, "mom and dad still gone...oh," after hitting send she saw the plant and dropped down beside her sister, "what are you growin"

Callie was scribbling down notes pertaining the the plant’s growth and smiled, satisfied with her progress. Typically by this point she was already close to flowering, and so far everything seemed to be tracking on par with her expectations. The process wasn’t always this successful, her first two attempts resulted in a plant that resulted in a LOT of seeds, apparently she ended up with seeds that resulted in a hermaphrodite plant. Which resulted in poor quality bud. Thankfully, she did some more research, got ahold of better quality seeds and had since grown and tended two three successful plants. This would be her fourth. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t take pride in her growing projects. Callie glanced up when she heard Kota speak, tolling her eyes playfully at the greeting, but looking to the plant with a proud smile.
“So, if I didn’t mislabel the seeds, this one should be Blue Dream. And if my notes are correct, it’s supposed to be a slightly ‘sativa-dominant’ strain… though I bet you’d know a bit more on that than I do.” Callie said with a chuckle, eyeing her sister closely and giving a nod. Unless you were familiar with her habits and routine, you couldn’t even tell that shed just come back in from one of her smoke sessions. Kota was a really good at covering her tracks.
“Soooo, who’re you texting?” Callie asked with a playful wiggle of her brows as she tucked her grow journal into it’s spot in the tent and started to zip it shut. “And yes, mom and dad got a call from someone at the orchards about a shopping mishap… apparently someone accidentally ordered the wrong bags for the apple picking post, we ended up receiving bags that have peaches on them instead of apples.” Oh the dramas associated with the family business being in orchards and such.

"Me and the spirits of our ancestors happily smile upon you sister of the green thumb," Kota joked before leaning in and smelling the thickest bud closest to her before Callie zipped the tent shut, "smells so goooood," Kota's phone dinged and she was drawn back into it (a smile on her face), "just a girl," Kota answered her sister without looking up, "her name is Delaney," Kota didn't have to swear Callie to secrecy about anything especially since for the last couple of years Callie and their Mom knew she liked girls, she wasn't worried Callie would tell anyone anything she shared, "I think I like her, she's so nice and shy and not like Tessa," the psycho ex that stalked Kota for a few months last year, "She's awesome...should we go help start dinner? I'm hungry," she was actually asking subliminally for Callie to make her something.

Callie couldn’t help but chuckle at her sister’s words, she didn’t quite know which side of her family she inherited her green thumb, but she was thankful for it. The Bartlett’s were known for being the farmers and such in the town, so it definitely came in handy for her work at the Orchards. Though it wasn’t near as enjoyable as the time she spent wandering the orchards with a camera and building her photography portfolio. “It’s still several weeks out from being able to be enjoyed fully, but you should definitely let me know how it turns out compared to the others. And if you want, you can decide the next strain.” Calling finished zipping the tent shut and then smiled at Kota.
“ooooh, do tell! Anyone would be an improvement from Tessa.” She said, rolling her eyes at the mention of that crazy bitch. Callie wasn’t an aggressive person, but she didn’t play when it came to her siblings, only she was allowed to affectionately mock and annoying them. She nodded, then stood up , offering a hand to Kota to assist her in getting up. “Tell you what, I’ll get dinner started, maybe even a little pre-dinner snack for you, but you’ve gotta tell me all about your new friend and not spare any details… at least until mom and dad or the boys get back.”

She pulled her phone out and typed on a sticky note: PICK WEED. Saved.
"bitchin' aho," (it was the one word she remembered the few times they visited moms family on the rez; the uncles just randomly shouted it at get togethers) she took her sisters hand and followed, "can we have some street style tacos please, I'll prep and spill the beans on Delaney Arquette," even saying her name just felt good, "she works at the movies that's where we met, well officially, we go to school together, she's the girl I took home remember? After the movies?" Kota was a talker when she was stoned often called the microphone when in one of her many smoking circles and her stories were literally broken down in back tracking and side quests, "We just clicked and she's so f'ing cute," she said with a happy sigh starting the collection of ingredients in their walk in cupboard. The Market as it was called in the house because their dad constantly kept it stocked.
"Innocent really, which I think goes with my personality. Are you thirsty?"

Callie chuckled at the familiar phrase used by their uncles on the rez. Kota always seemed to pick up things better than she did herself, but it was one of those things she adored about her sister. She helped Kota up and smiled as she got to being her chatty self. Chatty Kota showed up after she had smoked, Callie was familiar with this and it was something she could always look forward to. “Absolutely, as long as you’re going to give all the details; we can have whatever you’re hungry for.” She made a mental note of the female’s name; Delaney. She’d do her sister ‘due diligence’ and see what she could learn about this girl. She might not be the big sister of the year, but she made a habit of checking out the girls Kota was interested in after the crazy one.
Callie helped gather together the ingredients to make dinner, smiling with delight at seeing Kota this excited and chatty about a girl. “Wow, she sounds pretty amazing Kota.” Callie added as she moved to wash some of the fresh veggies from the fridge and grabbed her favorite wooden cutting board and knife. She set them on the counter and looked around. “Do you know if mom used the avocados to make guacamole last night, or do I need to make some fresh guac?” She asked as she set out cilantro, tomatoes, a red onion, a few assorted peppers and a few limes on the prep space. “Im absolutely parched! Do we have anymore of that mint and fruit infused water mom made a few days ago?” Callie asked as she looked into the meat fridge and tapped her chin. “Are you feeling carne asada, grilled chicken or chorizo?”

"always fresh guac," Kota chimed as she poured them both a glass of fruit fused water, "and chorizo," she answered mouth practically watering before she downed her entire glass, "aho, the perfect cure for cotton mouth."
Kota helped gather things for dinner as she went on talking about Delaney, "I think she's coming to this end of the seasons family get together on the lake...I think it's a date or maybe it's a date in my head," she was smiling and her eyes were a glassy shade of happiness (her stoner eyes she called them), "I think she's one I can actually introduce to mom, but you know in time," she paused and it was clear she forgot a little about what she was doing, "damn, um what do you want me to do?"

Callie shook her head with a gentle laugh as she picked some chorizo from the meat fridge and set it on the counter beside the stovetop as she glanced back to Kota. “Fresh guac it is!” she beamed a smile, accepting her glass of infused water and taking a few good sips before setting it away from the prep table. She might not have cotton mouth like Kota, but she was definitely parched! Callie grabbed a cast iron skillet from it’s spot on the wall nearest the stove and glanced back to Kota with a grin.
“ooooh, that’s so exciting Kota! Let me know if you need any help distracting or deflecting with dad, you know I’m not opposed to causing a scene. She teased, though mostly serious. Being the eldest, she held a lot of weight with their father. Especially when it came to the family business and talks of her future endeavors. He would absolutely lose it when she told her about wanting to pursue courses in photography, but thankfully she knew their mother would help calm him.
Callie grabbed on the the hanging aprons and stepped to the sink, washing her hands, wrists and arms, drying them off and then set to work removing the chorizo from the casing. She turned the burner on, set the heat to medium and added about a tablespoon of avocado oil to the skillet before she crumbled the chorizo into the pan. Next she added in some chipotle peppers in adobe sauce to the meat as she used her favorite wooden spoon to break the meat down a little more and combine the mixture as it cooked. The delightful aroma of cooking sausage and spices filled the air.
“Ground control to major Kota,” Callie gently laughed as pointed to the cutting board and knife on the prep station. “You can dice up the onion, tomatoes and cilantro for starters…. So, when are you seeing her again? Around school or maybe sooner?”

Kota got the giggles and she got all smiley when she was stoned, double that when she talked about Delaney but she could still function so she did as sis asked her setting into to chopping up things.
"I'm working up something, a date or something, and she's going to be my plus one at this seasons family get together," she started with the onions first, "I could always use your cooking skills for this date? Hint hint."

Hearing her sister’s plans sounded so exciting! “Ooooh, get it Kota!” Only a tiny pin-prick of jealousy at the idea of Kota bringing a plus-one to the family gatherings. She might need to get herself a conversational buffer, to avoid topics on dating and college plans. She stirred the chorizo as it cooked, raising a brow as she looked to Kota after her not so subtle attempt to drop a hint about wanting her to cook for the date she was planning. It made her grin. “Of course I’ll cook for you! Just tell me what to make and when, and I’ll take care of it for you!” When it came to Kota, Callie would do anything to help her. She was one of her favorite people in the world, so doing something to help her flow happy was always going to be a resounding ‘yes’.
