Girlfriends. The confirmation that Dakota was into girls and had invited Delaney to her secret spot at the lake all came together. She couldn't understand why a confident, fun, cool girl like Dakota would ever be interested in a shy, sweet girl like herself but regardless of whether there was real interest there, she was still excited to know that there might be a door open. The possibilities were...endless.
"Oh," she said with a little smile when Kota said she was available. "Me too." She clasped her fingers in her lap and bit on her lip momentarily. "Not that my parents would agree. Though- they also don't know that I'm attracted to girls as well as boys so that would be...interesting." She honestly had no idea how her parents would feel about that.

Kota fought back the sudden urge to want to snap her head toward Delaney like a sudden girl crush had come over her because it had; she was hands down the most beautiful girl that she had been attracted to. Kota usually ended up dating walking red flags, girls with a wild streak that wasn't Kota so she was figuring a shy more reserved girlfriend should be healthy, right? Oh God she was getting to far a head....Delaney might not have any interest Kota...you're getting quiet Kota! She told herself.
But she was available....
"My Mom and sister know, I'll tell Dad one day when I find the right one and if it's a boy," not really her preference and her tone said as much, "Then whatever...but yeah. I would keep us a se..I mean...I will keep your secret, that's what I meant," she stuttered through her correction and her voice cracked a bit from embarrassment as she pushed a lock of loose hair behind her ear she was now the one blushing deeply.

’Us’. The word had butterflies filling Delaney’s tummy and as she watched Kora stutter over her words that feeling only increased. She had seemed so smooth and confident up until now. It was…cute to see her start to blush.
Delaney tried to think of a way to smooth over the bump in the conversation but still was feeling nervous herself. “So, um, when did you say this lake trip would be?” she asked softly, watching how lovely it was when Kota tucked her hair behind her ear like that.

She couldn't be more grateful for Delaney in the moment, made her the ever more better as a person, she could look at her now a soft smile on her face. Even in the truck and the night sky darkening everything else the movie gave just the right amount of light for Kota to detail the other girls face.
Still as all this became a core memory for Kota she had to act normal and not act all weirdly gushy gushy, ANSWER THE QUESTION KOTA!
"At the end of every season they do something at the lake...so...its...we got one coming up soon...actually..," she wasn't afraid to look at Delaney now, they both would be each other's secret keepers, and if things worked out they could be more.
She smiled, "so if you wanted to rsvp now you totes can...and do you got a way home later? Im sure my sis won't mind..."

"Every season?" Delaney asked, interest peaked. "Even the end of fall? What do you at the lake when it so cold?" she was genuinely curious as she typical put lake activities with warm weather. But they were still at the beginning off all so maybe the upcoming event was for the end of summer technically.
"Sure, I'd love to rsvp. Sounds like we'll have a fun time," she said. She felt nervous actually about being around Dakota's whole family. She knew Kota was a Bartlett and Delaney didn't know a lot of the founding family members. It was definitely intimidating but she was trying to push herself out of her comfort zone, especially if it meant hanging out more with Kota. "My mom usually comes to pick me up when I text her, but she'd probably like it if I found another ride...if you're sure your sister won't mind of course," she added, moving her hand up to play with her earring, a nervous habit she'd picked up over the years.

Kota was immediately texting Callie asking if she could use the truck to take someone home as she kept the conversation going, "If it's early enough in fall we do a weenie roast and everyone just hangs out by the lake drinking and playing pumpkin toss and if it's late fall and to cold we use the community space by lake and do a small dinner...and drinking, I don't drink but it's fun and I usually go to my spot which even in fall is beautiful," she was smiling of course that Delaney was rsvp'ing, "sweet it's a uh date," her phone dinged and through the new flush of red across her face she read her sisters response, "I can take you home, guess that means this year you can ride with me to school if you want?"
She couldn't forget she just called it a date. Omg.

It sounded like a really nice time actually, what a cool family tradition. Delaney was a little jealous if she was being honest that not only did Dakota have siblings but extended family she could be around too. All Delaney had was her parents and while she loved them she did wish she could be closer to cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and the like. It sounded nice.
She noticed that Kota had called their get together a date but her mind was instantly racing with how to interpret that. Did she mean an actual date or was she just using the term with something far more vague and casual? She hadn't really been on dates before and wasn't sure if she needed to behave differently if it was a real date. She continued to play with her earrings out of nerves, spinning the stud around in it's hole.
"Oh that's nice of you," she said at the offer to drive her to school. "Is that too far out of your way though?" she asked. "I live in North Arbor. That apartment complex."

Kota felt she wanted to explain the date comment, that yes she personally wanted it to be a date but like no pressure Kota was just trying to tell Delaney she was interested in her...no. don't explain it.
"I don't mind at all and I know where that is, I got some friends over that way," she decided that if Delaney didn't hear it or had no comment Kota would just shush about it, "and now I got a new friend," she kinda sang spontaneously, "Sorry I do that sometimes," she saw Delany messing with her ear rings and she hoped she wasn't making the girl nervous.

Delaney was relieved that Dakota was at least familiar with the area, though it was a small enough town she supposed it shouldn't have been a surprise. Her eyes brightened and she giggled as Dakota sang out the next sentence. Dakota was fun, she was really enjoying getting to know her. Her hand dropped from her ear as she smiled at Dakota, the light from the movie danced in her eyes.
"Don't be sorry, I like it," she said, lightly touching Dakota's arm as a comforting gesture before letting it fall again. She was glad for the excuse to be talking to Dakota rather than watching the scary movie but then suddenly realized that it was the movie that had brought Kota there in the first place. "Am I talking too much?" she asked suddenly. "I don't want to distract you from the movie. You paid to watch it after all..."

Kota smiled when Delaney offered comforting words, the girl accepted all of Kotas quirks so far and that personally felt great. So when the girl suddenly apologized herself Kota reached over and put her hand on top of Delaneys, "this is way better than the movie...," she didn't pull her hand back as quickly Kota even brushed the top of the other girls knuckles, she had such soft hands, "...so don't worry," she then she let go laying her hands on the steering wheel, smiling from ear to ear.

Butterflies erupted in her stomach as Dakota rested her hand on top of hers, the soft stroking of her knuckles made her cheeks turn pink and a smile she couldn't stop lifted her lips. It wasn't a particularly long moment but Delaney felt the loss all the same when Kota moved her hand away. She looked up at her out of the corner of her eye to see the girl's big and beautiful smile and it made her smile more as a result.
"Your hands are warm..." she said after a moment, just trying to find things to stay. "Feels nice." There was a roughness to them from what Delaney imagined came from working with her family but it was a nice kind of rough.

and that's when Kota slipped her hand back into hers, she didn't hide nor shy away from it for the rest of the movie. Kota sat with the world's biggest smile, she took Delaney home and Kota already started planning things for a first date.
