PERSONALITY
Likes: Cooking, skating, video games, learning to play piano Dislikes: Family conflicts, his newfound wealth, the Hollifield's obsession about academic prowess Strengths: Easy-going, empathetic, sociable, vocal Weaknesses: Learning difficulties, struggles to concentrate (ADHD), easily frustrated
General personality: Angel is generally easy-going, laid back and playful. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, unless the conflict comes from within his family. He’s played the role of the perfect son for most of his life, diffusing his parents’ conflicts with humour and positivity. But now everything has changed and his relationship with his mother, which used to be extremely close, is suffering from it.
He feels very uncomfortable with coming into wealth after living a very modest life, even though he knows newfound privileges and opportunities are around the corner. This internal conflict extends to his family. Where he used to be a big people-pleaser, a budding rebellious streak is just beginning to emerge. Angel's sense of isolation in Sweetwater is a result of leaving behind a close-knit group of friends and feeling misunderstood and pulled in different directions in this new environment.
He’s unsure of what he wants to do in the future and his learning difficulties make it hard to see himself in an educational role, like most of the Hollifield family. On top of that, his estrangement until recently make him particularly sensitive about criticism about his genealogy. How can you feel like a “real Hollifield” when you thought they were just a bunch of privileged a******* until a year ago?
HISTORY
Education: High School Senior Years in Sweetwater: 1 Family Members: The Hollifields (founding family): Godric (grandfather), Shirley (grandmother - deceased), Jack Hollifield (uncle), _____ Hollifield (mother), _____ Ruiz (father, not in Sweetwater - separated)
General History: The Hollifields' commitment to education extended beyond mere rumor. They established the local newspaper, which remained a central part of the town's community, providing a platform for intellectual discourse and community updates. Additionally, they were the driving force behind the town's library, fostering an enduring love for books and knowledge.
However, Angel's mother chose a different path when she married outside of Sweetwater. She ventured away from the opulent and intellectually rich family background to be with the man she loved. Their life took them to different places and allowed her to experience a more diverse and vibrant world, far removed from the structured life she left behind.
Angel's mother had always maintained a difficult and strained relationship with her family, particularly her father, Godric. Despite the Hollifields' esteemed position in Sweetwater and their commitment to education and tradition, their high expectations and traditional values often clashed with her more independent and adventurous spirit. Over time, their disagreements escalated, leading to a painful estrangement.
For years, Angel grew up hearing stories of his mother's tumultuous relationship with the Hollifields. These tales were often tinged with bitterness, painting her family as rigid, and judgmental. Angel couldn't help but develop a skewed impression of the extended family, perceiving them as unkind and rigid people.
Unfortunately, Angel’s parents eventually separated last year, partly due to ongoing money-related stress. It was during this time that his mother decided to return to Sweetwater, seeking a fresh start and reconnect with her roots. But the reality turned out to be far more complex than Angel had anticipated. Some members of the Hollifield family were willing to embrace their return, recognizing the importance of family ties. However, others still held grudges and were unwilling to let go of the past conflicts Angel didn’t really have a grasp on.
At an age where he’s trying to find where he belongs, the situation leaves Angel grappling with mixed emotions and a sense of disconnection. He finds himself torn between a decreasing loyalty to his mother and a growing appreciation for the complexity of the extended family. And it sucks.
