HISTORY
Education: Highschool, some credits towards an associates degree but incomplete Years in Sweetwater: 1 Family Members: Sasha Hackett, grandmother, 64, romance novelist Thomas Hackett, grandfather, 67, deceased Cordelia Hackett, mother, 41, unemployed Tabitha "Tabs" Hackett, sibling, deceased Quinn Hackett, half sibling, 16, high school student
General History: (TW: family death) The Hackett's were a small but happy family that spent a majority of their life residing in Minnesota. Well, still small but the happy part debatable nowadays. Sasha and Thomas were loving parents to their only daughter Cordelia. As a young girl, Cordelia was studious and quiet. Nothing of note occurred in their idyllic lives, at least, not until Cordelia up and moved to the cities for college and was pregnant within her first year and turned their slow life upside down. Even then, the Hackett's supported their daughter and even moved from their small town in northern Minnesota to be closer to their daughter so they could support her while she continued her studies. She gave birth to twins, going into labor during a finals exam no less.
Twins Tabitha and Jude were born, life went on. Their father was absent, but the family of three hardly felt his absence with their loving mother and doting grandparents. Eventually, Cordelia received her degree and the family moved back up north, preferring life on the lake in the quiet rural north. At this time, Sasha and Thomas wanted a change of scenery and packed their bags for Sweetwater, Colorado.
The twins spent most of their time outside, living in a small cabin on the lake with a lot of land to the Hackett name. The two were thick as thieves. Tabitha was always the on in charge. Spunky and endearing and, while she would never admit it, exceptionally bossy. She always claimed since she was brought into the world four minutes sooner than her brother, it was only natural she be the leader of the pair. Jude never complained, happy to not have to be the decision maker of the two.
The years pass by with warmth and laughter and eventually, a new addition to the family came along. Quinn from a young age was a softspoken girl, and despite her siblings best attempts to involve her, always a little withdrawn. Still, they were a tight knit bunch.
The Hackett's weren't immune to tragedy forever, and at 16, Jude learned that lesson. Cordelia had been called into work on that day, working as an on call nurse at the hospital. She entrusted the older two to stay and watch Quinn. Tabitha could never sit still long, especially in their small home. Feeling cooped up, she wanted to go out ice skating on the lake. Tabitha was a phenomenal skater and was training hard with ambitions for the Olympics.
Jude and Tabitha had a rare fight, loud and explosive. He didn't want to be left alone having to babysit Quinn. In the end, Tabitha got her way and headed out while Jude stayed inside with Quinn. Jude doesn't recall much of the night Tabitha passed, only remembering a strong sense of wrongness in his chest. Outside, Tabitha had fallen in. Quinn would later tell him he had gone out in nothing but his shorts, t-shirt, and socks to the lake to look for Tabitha. All he remembers is shaking violently, cold and wet and his mother's horrified expression when she got home and his confusion at tears streaming down his cheeks. Authorities would find Tabitha's body in the lake days later.
The Hackett family did not recover from the loss. Cordelia was unable to maintain a job after, spending long hours locked in her room. His grandparents supported the family from afar the best they could, transferring money weekly. A lot of the time they remained in Minnesota was a blur, with Jude having to give up much to take care of his mother and his sister.
One day, Jude just left without warning. He moved to South Dakota where he worked for a time, sending money to his family in Minnesota. Letters came from Quinn that went unanswered, unable to read them and have to face the red hot shame burning under his skin at leaving her there. He attended school part time, working on obtaining credits towards an associates degree. His life seemed to be moving back in the right direction. He could breathe again. He could smile.
It was news of his grandfathers passing that reached him that caused him to seek out his family again. By this time, they had made the move to live with his grandmother in Sweetwater, his mother's mental health worsening.
Guilt is what brought Jude to Sweetwater a year ago and binds him there still.
