Ferris toyed with reaching for the bottle again, not because he wanted another drink but because the man looked extremely close to drinking out of the bottle. Which to be honest, was a lot more empty than full. But he worried that might trigger him, either to be upset about Ferris helping himself or just make him realize that he wanted more.
He took another handful of fries, though largely to help remind himself to keep his mouth shut as the man spoke. Ferris didn't have any answers to that himself. He'd heard a few excuses like protecting the other partner or fearing for safety, but from the way Elijah spoke, neither quite sounded right.
Ferris winced a little as the man said it even more directly. He related to some of how Elijah felt. At least Murphy had been direct with him the moment she ended it. He wasn't sure how he would have reacted if she went behind his back. Of course her walking out had still made the last five years of their lives a lie.
"You two sound like strangers," he noted. He almost asked if the man thought his kids knew, since they were home more than him or what they would say if they suspected it. But the last time he tried to bring up the family Elijah so loved, he had kicked the hornets nest. He would rather not a second time so he kept his mouth shut.

Surprisingly, Elijah resisted the itch for another drink and waved the waitress over, he handed back the empty glass and bottle and asked for a water. Despite the anger, and desire to drink away his woes; he’s was still a Vanderson. And he wouldn’t allow himself to get too messy in public. His current state was already more than he generally allowed and he wasn’t going to make matters worse for himself. Nor did he want to be any cause for concern to the staff. It wasn’t easy, but he knew it was for the best.
“You know, I feel like we are… and I don’t want to get to know her again.” He admitted, almost begrudgingly. No, Elijah didn’t care to give someone a second chance to screw him over. Plus, he wondered what other lies she was capable of, especially since she so flawlessly kept Claire’s paternity a secret all these years. He had originally hoped that maybe she didn’t know… but the private investigator had uncovered the paper trail from a paternity test Siobhan had paid for and done herself… a few weeks after Claire was born. She knew the whole time, and just left him in the dark for her charade. That, was unforgivable.

Ferris was surprised the man let himself get this messy in public. He was a Vanderson after all, most of the family was so uptight and private about everything. For the patriarch to confess such dark and ugly family drama to him of all people felt...uncomfortable. Ferris knew these families weren't perfect, but this was...not the revelation he wanted.
At least he ordered a water. Ferris let out a breath and shook his head when the waitress looked at him for an order.
"I feel that way about my ex," Ferris said, finally giving in. Not because he wanted to talk about himself, but because he felt compelled to let the man know he really did understand. That he had, in a way, been there. "Together over five years and one day, she was done and it felt like...like I had never known her to begin with. It hurt for a while," and so did so many other things, "But sometimes the change is for the better," he added hesitantly.
"So...what about the shooting range? Or a sport?" He gestured at the TV as the game finally came back. "Hockey's a contact sport." Better to go back to the outlet options.

Senses dulled by the alcohol helped him at the time, because despite the burning rage he wanted so badly to act upon; he couldn’t be bothered enough to actually care to at the moment. Which was good for him, because he definitely didn’t need to draw more attention to himself than he already had. Part of him felt bad for his ‘information dump’ on Ferris, the poor man didn’t deserve it. And when Ferris opened up to share his own woeful relationship experience, he shook his head.
“I’d rather know now than waste anymore time on the lies.” he admitted, actually relieved to see the water brought to the table. Taking a sip of the cool refreshing liquid, though it wasn’t quite the liquid his mind was hoping for.
He looked back to the tv with a raised brow and nodded slightly. “Ya know, I hadn’t considered a contact sport…” He trailed off, considering it. He might not be great, but it might be a constructive way to rein in anger. Without getting him in any serious trouble. “Gun range isn’t a bad idea, but I’m not the best shot.”

The Fire Chief nodded in agreement. That was how he had come to look at it. Anything else and he would be letting something he couldn't control eat him up inside. Of course, even now he wished none of it had happened. That Garrett was still alive, that Murphy hadn't left, that they'd carried on with their lives and gotten married and had kids, that his family hadn't disowned him. Well, that last thing wasn't all that bad.
"Not sure about in town, but be there's some local rec leagues nearby. Maybe check out a game live, NHL or rec, see if you like it." Well, until a thought occurred to him. "Provided you know how to skate," he added. Which for hockey was rather important. He did find it amusing how their conversation had come full circle.
And then most of his attention went back to the tv as things got rather physical again after some quick goals. A lot of penalties, not so many direct fights, but things were ramping up.

Elijah appreciated the focus returning to the game, and off the personal stuff. The mention of seeing a game live definitely sounded like something he’d have to give a try. His initial interest piqued. “Can’t say I’ve skated much in the last few years, but it couldn’t hurt to pick it back up.” He said with a shrug, another sip from the glass of water and giving a half frown, opting to take a few fries to chew on instead.
The rest of the game proving to entertain him well enough, probably taking enjoyment of the physical altercations more than he ought to. Okay, so regardless of having not skates in years, Elijah was seriously considering breaking out the skates and giving it a go. Even if only to have something to direct her energy into. “Do you have experience playing?”

Ferris hadn't skated in years either. The thought actively hurt to think about. "With figure skater skates or hockey skates?" If the man had never considered the sport, there was a very clear answer. Not that they were all that different, mostly just lacking the picks at the end. At least if the guy had skated before, that was the biggest hurdle to his barrier of entry solved.
The direct question surprised him. Not that Elijah hadn't been talking to him the entire time but honestly Ferris had gotten the feeling he could have been anyone seated at the table and Elijah would have talked to him. But that was okay. "What, 'cause I'm Canadian I'm an experienced skater?" He knew that wasn't close to how the man had worded, it, he just wanted something to grumble about and deflect some of the awkwardness of the real question. Because even more than talking about his ex, talking about playing hockey brought up memories he typically buried. Ferris relented. "Yeah. Kid leagues, travel teams, high school, some rec teams." He'd never been good enough to go pro or even a lower tier professional league.
"Haven't played in a while though," he admitted, folding his arms and shrugging uncomfortably.

“Oh, I doubt there were hockey skates, I wouldn’t have known the difference.” Elijah admitted with a shrug, he’d need to do his research before he could spend any actual time trying out this potential hobby. Afterall, it wouldn’t do him any good to half ass it. He raised a brow at Ferris as he spoke and seemed a touch confused.
“I didn’t mean to offend or pry, sorry. The alcohol makes me a bit more chatty.” He offered an apologetic look, another few fries and he gave a shrug. When Ferris continued, he gave an understanding nod. “Well, I’ll give it a look into, might be a good way to let off steam without causing any trouble.”

Ferris had no doubt the man would figure out how to make it happen if he wanted it. With money as no object, it made even an expensive hobby like hockey that much easier to get into. If it kept the man from starting a fist fight in the future, Ferris really hoped it worked out for him. And even if it was an idea he forgot about once he sobered up, it seemed to have shifted some of his ire.
Ferris would much rather have an awkward conversation with Elijah than be called in to help Waylon sort out a home invasion and assault crime scene.
He shrugged and took another fist full of fries, dunking them one at a time into the cheese. Clearly, he wasn't all that bothered. "Let me know how it goes."
And then finally, another fight broke out in the hockey match, this time between two sets of players, one taking his opponent to the ground where the rfs broke it up, the others trading more than a few good slugs.
