It was an uneventful Thursday, and after school let out Callie found herself feeling especially ‘pent up’ and decided the best option would be to hit the Rec’s climbing wall. Sure she could have just called up a ‘friend’ to relieve the stress, but she knew exercise would also release the endorphins. Besides, she liked giving her body this workout. Climbing was just one of those more involved workouts and she liked the distraction. Callie grabbed her gym bag out of her locker and headed to the women’s locker room.
After about ten minutes Callie reemerged from the locker room now sporting a navy blue sports bra and matching leggings, she had put her long dirty blonde hair in a messy bun and a pair of white running shoes. She approached the counter to get a pair of climbing shoes, harness and a pouch of chalk. She exchanged your typical pleasantries with the person behind the counter as she took the climbing shoes. Callie found a vacant cubby for her shoes and sat to change into the climbing shoes. She stepped into her harness and secured it with practiced ease, attaching the pouch of chalk and closing it after slapping some between her hands.
Callie found an empty section of the wall and set to work attaching her harness to the rope, making it look a little more complicated than it actually was, the rope was the one part she always had to take her time securing, just for her own peace of mind. Once satisfied, Callie set herself up to start climbing one of the more familiar, but intermediate sections of the wall, glad to find something to do that would get her blood flowing and heart rate rising.

After a difficult day of getting mediocre school assignment results, Angel needed a win. He walked into the Rec with a clear objective that extended beyond mere climbing.
"Hey, I heard you folks might be looking for some extra help around here," he mentioned, retrieving a neatly folded sheet of paper from his bag and sliding it across the counter. "Thought I'd drop off my resume, just in case."
With his professional mission over, Angel shifted his focus to the climbing gear. White running shoes were swapped for climbing shoes and a harness. His fingers moved in a somehow practiced motion as he fastened the harness. The anticipation of both the climb and the potential job hung in the air.
As Angel prepared to ascend, he cast a keen eye on the climbing wall, searching for an unoccupied section to make his mark.. "Fingers crossed they like what they see on paper as much as they're about to see on the wall," he mumbled under his breath. Taking a moment to gather himself, Angel inhaled deeply, before showcasing not only his climbing prowess but also his resilience and dedication… or you know, the sort of stuff they tell you to demonstrate in interviews.
"Just a heads up, my climbing technique might look like a mix of Spider-Man and a confused giraffe. Don't be alarmed, it's a work in progress.”
“If you see me clinging to a hold for dear life, just throw me a supportive nod, yeah? I’m trying to make a good impression,” he whispered to Callie discreetly pointing at the desk.

Callie wasn’t a gym girlie, but rock climbing was definitely one form of physical activity she enjoyed. Plus, it got more of her body engaged and focused on the task at hand than most other exercises she enjoyed. Plus, if she was on school property she was less likely to run into any guys that she’d find herself interested in. It might seem pathetic, but she had an itch that wasn’t being scratched currently, and it was making her a bit more tense than usual.
Thankful for the physical activity to distract her and refocus her pent up frustration. Callie had already climbed her way through two of the intermediate sections of rock wall and was preparing to start a third when another person approached the section beside her. She raised a brow, but gave a friendly smile and nod, some lose dirty blond hair threatening to fall from her messy bun. She cast her eyes briefly to the desk, then back to the young man.
“Just scan the walls and pick up on the patterns. Most of these walls have heavily repeated rock patterns, if you can pin down the pattern prior to your climb, you’ll always know where to find the next hold… it’ll make you look like you’re climbing without even having to spot your next move.” While she wasn’t big into sports herself, Callie spent a lot of time with the rock walls. And in such a small town it wasn’t odd to learn there weren’t many places to practice climbing indoor. Suffice it to say she was rather proficient with these rock walls, especially the intermediate ones. She still struggled on the more advanced walls at time, but damn did she enjoy the challenge.
She brushed the chalk from her hand and extended it to him. “I’m Callie Bartlett, I think we’ve got some classes together. You’re Angel Hollifield, right?” She raised a brow, saying his name made her register that he was most likely related to Jack Hollifield, their Prinicpal, and current fixation for her attraction and attention. Though, not openly. She’d have to be careful not to say anything too giving. After all, she worked hard to keep that side of her life private.

Following the tips of his classmate, Angel felt the coarse texture of the climbing wall against his fingertips as he visibly contemplated his next move. Half-way through the wall, he hesitated a moment too long. Trying to find a good foothold, he probed the next hold with his hand, but it was flatter than he expected for his beginner grip. He redistributed his weight evenly between his limbs.
"I'm kind of stuck," Angel admitted.
His fingers clung desperately to the small holds, his muscles burning with fatigue. The climbing wall seemed to mock him with its height, and doubt crept into his mind. He stole a glance downward, the ground appearing farther away than ever.
Summoning a newfound resolve, Angel took a deep breath and made a split-second decision. With a dramatic release, he let go of the wall, arms outstretched, and descended in a controlled free fall.
“Got the falling skill down to a T!”
He dramatically collapsed onto the mat down in a starfish pose. From the floor, he extended his hand to shake Calliope’s.
“Ruiz-Hollifield actually. Didn’t exactly grow up surrounded by those pompous farts, I reassure you!”
He propped himself on his elbow, looking at Calliope properly for the first time.
“Wait… you said… Bartlett? Like… the Founding Familly Bartlett? he cringed at his faux-pas. Not that all the rich people in town are pompous farts. I’m sure you completely… erm… They’re fine. Really.”

Callie’s attention on him as he climbed, and then as he got a little stuck. He had only been slightly off, but she knew just how hard it could be to keep the pattern in mind when trying to climb regularly, she couldn’t imagine how much more stressful it would be while trying to make a good impression on a potential employer. Watching as he chose a controlled free fall. She chuckled at his upbeat attitude and gave his hand a shake, making a mental note of his hyphenated last name.
His comment actually made her chuckle turn more into laughter, and even more so when he made the connection of her own last name. She shook her head with an amused grin. “Oh, I take no offense to that. The Bartlett’s can be some very annoying pompous farts.” clearly she wasn’t bothered by his comments, actually finding them quite accurate. Despite being the ‘farmers’, even the Bartlett’s could act just as petulant and childish when it came to pushing their wealth and name around town. Exactly why she was going through the school for her community garden project instead of her family. Though, she was thankful that her grandfather was willing to donate land for the greenhouse and garden. Other family members didn’t see the point in doing anything that would make them a profit.
“Pompous farts aside, how are you liking being in Sweetwater?”
