General personality: MJ is tough. She's always had to be. When she sets her mind to a task she accomplishes it, and in the rare event that she cannot the result is devastation. She is usually honest and truthful, but if those things won't serve her end goal then she won't be; she's a survivor who does and says what she needs to to keep herself and those she loves alive--regardless of the moral ramifications. MJ's sense of humor and general likability keep her in the green with most people, but her pride ends up getting her in trouble every now and then...[/ul]

General History: MJ's relatively short life has already been filled with more hurt, loss, grief, and trauma than the average elderly person in Sweetwater.

MJ's father, Gregory, is the son of an investment company's CEO; aka his family's ridiculously rich.
MJ's mother, June, is the daughter of alcoholic abusers who jump from job to job and live off of food stamps.
The two met while they were in high school. They both attended the party of a mutual friend and from the moment they laid eyes on each other they were hooked. Considering the difference in lifestyles, the only opportunity they had to see one another was at parties. Their encounters always involved alcohol, various kinds of recreational drugs, and sex. June got pregnant with MJ when she was fifteen.

Gregory's parents tried to blackmail June into aborting MJ, and when Gregory found this out he moved out. The two found a grungy apartment that was little better than being homeless. Their sense of rejection and loss and prior exposure drove them to a lifestyle of barely getting by while spending all of their money on keeping their highs. MJ was born into that situation, fondly named after one of their favorite things to consume--Mary Jane.

Gregory and June tried to do better at various stages of their lives. They would attend rehab anytime the local department of family services caught wind of their appalling living conditions and threatened to take MJ. Their sobriety would only last long enough to satisfy, and once they were out from under inspection they would dive head first back into the life of addiction.

Ellis D. was born when MJ was five. He was also named after one of their favorites. He suffered far more from the drug exposure in the womb than MJ did. He has always been sickly and troubled in the mind, much like their mother.

Gregory up and left June when MJ was ten. His parents invited him back into their lives and promised him wealth and a chance to redo things--as long as he left June and the children behind. Gregory was sorrowful but went through with it. The abandonment took June to the next level. MJ had already been Ellis D.'s primary caregiver, but after their dad left it was pretty much the two on their own. During that year the local foster care investigator showed up and took them away.

MJ and Ellis D. were in foster care for two and a half years. They didn't see their mother once during that time, and were bounced around due to Ellis D.'s health problems and behaviors. They were in five different homes before they were placed with a kind older couple who didn't have any kids of their own. They were Taylor and Miranda Vincent. It worked with them. They loved them, gave them consistency, and were committed to them through the worst of times. MJ started hoping against hope that this family would adopt them. They were willing, too...

Unfortunately that would have been too easy, and MJ's life had never been easy. A long lost relative of her mother's--a second cousin twice removed or something--showed up out of the blue claiming she wanted the kids. She became their kinship placement, their mother's rights were terminated, and the kids were adopted by "Aunt Lucy". Within six months and after extensive exposure to substance abuse and physical abuse, the kids left Aunt Lucy's home. They ran the streets until the foster system caught wind of them again, at which point they ran. In running they came across their mother. She tagged along.

MJ aimed for the most remote location she could find: Sweetwater. She'd heard of it from a friend who she'd met in a chat room. A taxi brought them into town one warm summer night, using almost all that was left of the money MJ had stolen from Aunt Lucy. 

It's been three years since the family arrived. MJ has been juggling school and side gigs to pay for the trailer her family lives in. Her mother is basically a bum who steals from MJ to buy her booze and otherwise sells her body to the scum of the town. Ellis D. is in school as well, enrolled in Sweetwater's rather lacking special needs program. MJ does what she has to for her family's good.[/ul]
