NADINE CARTIER Cate Blanchett
DETAILS
Species: Vampire Species Appearance: N/A Occupation: Town Councilwoman / Coven Leader Residence: Manor in the Outskirts Age: 722 Birthday: February 20th Height: 6' Weight: 148 lbs Hair Color: Blonde Eye Color: Blue Sexual Orientation: Unclear

PERSONALITY
Likes: Cleanliness, well-tailored suits, expensive whiskey, cocaine, opera, politics, classical philosophy, playing the piano, beautiful women, showing off, being in charge, law and order, and (obviously) blood. Dislikes: People who talk too much, people who talk about their feelings, men and their agendas, take out restaurants, disorder, children, and traitors. Strengths: Highly intelligent, gifted musician, charismatic, disciplined, prudent Weaknesses: Arrogant, spiteful, unaffectionate, callous, power-hungry
General personality: Nadine has heard it all before; that she's a cold-blooded reptile, a sociopathic bitch, a hateful elitist. But none of it has ever bothered her. The good thing about being indifferent to the needs of others is that you're also indifferent to their opinions. Nadine knows who she is. She doesn't need the love or affirmation of others. Nadine has power, money, and eternal life - three things she wouldn't trade away for all the love in the world.
She's an elitist in every sense: the strong and powerful survive, and the weak are at their mercy. Vampires, above all, are the superior beings. But her elitism isn't all about her species. Nadine believes in the value of knowledge and learning. She has a profound love of art, music, and literature, and a keen interest in science and mathematics. After all, when one lives forever, what is there to do but learn?
HISTORY
Education: Endless (though on the record? She has a law degree from Yale) Years in Sweetwater: Seven Family Members: None
General History: Nadine was born at the height of French supremacy in 1301 AD. Her given name was Clémentine Leopoldine Coustellier, daughter of Marquis Tumas Coustellier. A close ally of King Phillip IV, not long after Nadine was born, Marquis Coustellier relocated from Paris to Avignon to serve as an informal advisor to Pope Clement V. Though she grew up surrounded by the opulence of the aristocracy and the Avignon papacy, Clémentine was expected to embody all the virtues that it seemed so many around her lacked: chastity, humility, temperance, and obedience. Her father had two daughters; his eldest, Clémentine (Nadine) he offered to a husband and his younger daughter to the church as a nun.
When she was fifteen, Nadine married a much older Duke Philippe de Valois, and relocated to Paris, France. She was every bit the wife that she’d been raised to be, which for a time was enough. But when Nadine failed to produce heirs for her husband and was determined by a “doctor” to be barren, her husband decided that her wife must be possessed by evil. He tried to have her exorcised, but her father mercifully interceded on her behalf. In protest, Duke de Valois sought comfort in the arms of mistresses and prostitutes. Nadine kept up her part of the marriage, enduring the embarrassment and negligence with patient silence. His exploits didn’t last long. Philippe died of syphilis when Nadine was 20.
Nadine was quickly married to Philippe de Valois’s younger brother, Guillaume. It was a marriage of obligation, not love, but one that suited them both just fine. They lived largely separate lives, and Guillaume allowed his wife many more liberties than others of her station enjoyed. She was allowed to pursue her interests in art and politics, though always within the neat boundaries of French medieval society.
Nadine was in her late thirties when she met Balthazar L'Aignelet. Immediately, Nadine was dazzled by him. He was well-traveled and well-versed in art, history, and politics. Balthazar was immediately enamored with the shrewd woman who’d been hidden away for so long. He told Nadine he would help her free her mind, and she readily let him educate her. They were kindred spirits, it would seem; lovers of art, politics, and creatures of darkness. Balthazar was in his sixties—or at least, so Nadine thought. Their relationship was not romantic or physical, but a bonding, intellectual affair more real than anything Nadine had ever known.
In 1348, the Black Death came to Paris. The illness devastated the French population. Guillaume was unable to escape it, dying just as Nadine started to fall ill herself. Balthazar cared for her but to no avail. It was only when it became clear that she was to die that Balthazar revealed his secret: he was a vampire, and the only way to save her was to make her one as well. She agreed, and Balthazar brought her back from the brink of death.
For centuries, Nadine and Balthazar traveled the world and weathered the storms of history together. They were swept up in wars, philosophical movements, political uprisings, and religious revolutions. As the years went on, they began to amass a coven. Balthazar had his pets, Nadine had a few of their own, but both worked together to ensure their Coven could strike down any obstacle in their path.
Eventually, after centuries of wandering, a conflict with a rival coven forced Nadine, Balthazar, and their kind to flee east to Russia. Nadine (now Klementina) and Balthazar (now Bodhan) endeared themselves to the Romanov dynasty. Their secret was known to the family and carefully kept in exchange for their service. Nadine and Balthazar used their positions to insulate their Coven from harm of human, hunter, or vampire kind. They lived out their days peacefully, with all the culture, finery, and resources at their disposal the royal family could provide.
But unfortunately, the peace was not meant to last. World War I broke out, and along with it a Coven war that spanned the entirety of Europe. Alliances were made, and battles fought, but in the end, Nadine and Balthazar retreated with what was left of their coven to Russia—just in time for Lenin and his Bolsheviks to seize power. Lenin was aided by a Coven leader whose ‘family’ had been slaughtered by Nadine and Balthazar’s underlings. During the uprising, Balthazar and all but her and one other of their coven were slaughtered.
Nadine (now Nadia) retreated out of the now Soviet Union to her home country of France. At the outbreak of World War II, Nadine allied herself with the Nazi party as a spy and assassin, finally returning to her home country of France to occupy a shadow position in the Vichy government. Shortly after the Battle of Stalingrad, when it became clear the Allies were going to win the war, Nadine fled once again to South America.
In the 1980s, Nadine came to the United States under an assumed identity: Cecille Lavinge. Eventually, she traded in the name for Nadine Cartier. After being on the run for so long, Nadine finally decided that she’d had enough. Nadine arrived in Sweetwater with her ‘son’ Adam five years ago. Upon her arrival, the older more experienced vampire killed the weaker coven leader and assumed control—starting her own reign of terror.
