General personality: Julian is a dichotomy. On one hand, he is someone who wants to be in total control. Julian is organized and ambitious - demanding excellence from himself and those around him. While he comes off as cocky and domineering, most of the time - almost despite himself - his heart is in the right place. Julian sees himself as someone who has something to prove, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. As a former Marine, he still carries around the exacting kind of discipline only a military background can provide. To Julian, there is a correct way to do things, and any deviation from perfection is laziness, and nothing more.
On the other hand, Julian is completely out of control. He has the kind of temper that can turn on a dime, sending him into a blackout kind of rage. He’s never violent towards others, but has been known to destroy property in his fits. Julian drinks heavily to cope with his own demons, though he’s pretty high-functioning as far as alcoholics go. Even after a night of drinking and brooding, he’s up at the crack of dawn to go on a morning run. He is pretty good at keeping on a brave face for the rest of the world. Julian hides his drinking and depression pretty successfully from his girls and to the untrained eye, seems pretty put together. The one thing that crops up in his day-to-day which is harder to conceal is his severe claustrophobia. Mostly though, his wife is the one who truly sees the good, the bad, and all the ugly.
If you’re one of the people in his inner circle, he is fiercely loyal - even if he has a strange way of showing it sometimes. Julian loves his friends and family fiercely, especially his wife, who - though they have an unconventional relationship - he very much considers his soul mate.
HISTORY
Education: B.S. in Finance Years in Sweetwater: 6 Family Members: Founding family member. Keith (faither, Mariela (mother), Kalena (younger sister), X (younger sister), X (younger brother), Venus (niece, 12), X (wife), Olive (daughter, 7), Eleanor (daughter, 5)
General History: Mariela Irwin would always tell you that she loved all her children equally. This is largely true; from the first time she saw him, Julian was her darling and treasured son - her firstborn. Her love for him was overwhelming, everything a child could ask for. But for Julian, this didn’t seem to be enough. As a young child, Julian was sickly and clingy. He required constant attention and affection, which wasn’t quite his father’s parenting style. Even though Keith Irwin loved his son the best way he knew how, Julian always felt like his father’s distant approach to parenting was a personal slight.
Once his sister Kalena - the miracle baby - came into the picture, jealousy almost immediately took hold. While Julian was successful in his own right, everything came so easily to Kalena. While she did well in school almost without even trying, he had to struggle to keep up the same grades. While she was a naturally gifted athlete, he had to train and train just to perform at the same level. Even though he had decent grades and extracurricular activities, poor performance on the SAT and ACT gave him few serious college prospects. Instead of pursuing college, he decided to enlist in the Marines.
Julian was an excellent soldier. The structure and discipline were good for him and the military gave him a sense of belonging and pride he was somehow lacking before. He served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. During what would become his last tour of duty in Iraq, he was in a convoy that hit an IED. He was trapped in a burning vehicle before finally being able to free himself, pulling out two other soldiers. He and those with him were captured and held as prisoners of war for more than two weeks after being freed. Julian was treated for his injuries and was given an honorable discharge. He left the Marines a decorated soldier with severe PTSD.
While in recovery, he met the woman who would eventually become his wife. She was working as a mental health professional when she met Julian, though he was not under her care. They quickly fell in love and eloped eight months after meeting. Julian was determined to hit the ground running in his new life with the ground running. They moved to Denver. His wife continued her medical practice part time while caring for their two daughters who arrived shortly after their union. Julian started a degree in finance - intending to return to Sweetwater and take over as family representative. By the time he started his degree, Kalena - his sister and the model child - had returned to Sweetwater and started to manage the bank. But he didn’t consider her a threat. In his mind, acting as family representative was his right as the oldest son.
But Julian wasn’t able to hide his struggles from his family. Since leaving the military, he started to drink heavily and engage in impulsive, reckless behavior. He liked to gamble and drive his motorcycle when he was unable to sleep, resulting in two DUI charges on his record. Though his family loved him, it was clear that he was immature and in no position to be responsible for the Irwin family. Through it all, his wife stuck by him - his redeemer, his better half. Granted she did her fair share of drinking and partying as well, but she was always in control - there to clean up the mess when Julian got in over his head.
When Julian finished his degree, to his surprise, he discovered that Kalena had been named family representative. He was furious, threatening not to return to Sweetwater and cut off the family altogether. His wife talked him down, and they decided to return to Sweetwater as planned. He works at the bank, living near his family while raising his two beloved daughters with his wife. Julian, however, remains bitter about being passed over as family representative and is looking to prove himself instead of living in his sister’s shadow.
Note: Julian and his wife have an unconventional relationship. A couple years after their last daughter was born, they decided to open up their marriage. While they remain each other’s exclusive romantic partners, they both are allowed to seek other sexual partners outside of their relationship. It works for them, and has even brought them closer as a couple. They keep their arrangement relatively quiet, though among their close friends and some family, it's a little bit of an open secret. Some people accept it, or at least understand that it's none of their business, while other people have been extremely judgmental. The fact remains that anyone who has met Julian and his wife know that they have deep and abiding love, respect, and admiration for one another.
