PERSONALITY
Likes: - Staying busy - Music + concerts - Hanging out - Swimming - Animals (only the fluffy ones) - Romance (movies and novels)
Dislikes: - Silence - Being alone - Large crowds (concerts are okay but she can throw elbows) - Any reptiles or slimy creatures - Migraines
Strengths: - Loyal + supportive - Book smart (definitely not street)
General personality: Jo is a social butterfly so long as the crowd doesn't get too big. She tends to try to make friends as quickly as possible, and if that works, she's not letting you go easily. Her favorite way to get to know someone is self-disclosure. It may come off like she is trying to interrupt you and make the story about her, but in reality, it's just her trying to be relatable. When it comes to boys, Jo is all in. It probably stems from the daddy issues, but she'll fall in love with any guy that simply looks at her the right way. She'll do just about anything to keep them around. The idea of breaking up is pretty much a world-ender, and she tends to get a bit sweaty and nauseous... and cry-y.
She is shockingly quite good in school, even when she lets her relationships get in the way of schoolwork. Typically, Jo can teach herself most of the material a few minutes before an exam and walk away with an A. She can also fix most issues you're having with technology on the fly too, barring you give her some time to play around with the device and programs. If you try to ask her for directions, or expect her to be able to tell when someone is using her though, she's SOL.
Jo's a big music lover too, and if you see her without one of her headphones in, it's probably smart to suspect something is wrong. If she can't keep her mind busy with friends or schoolwork, Jo is listening to all kinds of music. Usually, she's got something loud like rock or some good pop ballads playing to keep her on track. She has no problem sneaking into local bars to hear a live band on the weekends either.
HISTORY
Education: Currently attending Hollifield High School as a senior.
Years in Sweetwater: 1
Family Members: Father: Joseph Thompson, 37, unknown Mother: Laurie Mitchell, 36, registered nurse Aunt: Sarah Mitchell, 32, counsellor
General History: Jo didn't have the most glamourous upbringing, living out of an apartment to old there were areas of the floor you had to avoid, or you'd fall right through. It didn't bother her much though. She had good friends in school, and they always understood that it was better to hang out at their place, and her parents were as happy and loving as any girl could ask for. Her foot had only gone through there floor once but only a little scar remained on her ankle and the story never fails to make a group laugh.
Growing up with teenage parents wasn't perfect, but certainly miserable. Her dad was able to get a decent job with a mechanic and her mom managed to work at a hospital, so at least there was insurance to all the inevitable broken toes and scraped knees. North Carolina was just warm enough to keep the apartment warm most days and the water was close enough that her mom worried Jo would turn into a fish someday.
About around when Jo was eleven, on Valentine's Day, her father never came home after work. Her mom, worried sick despite the fights they started having, put out a missing person's report. They worried and worried until finally, about a week later, he showed up. Not a hair on his head had been out of place and he looked as healthy as ever, but Jo never forgot the look on his face when she opened that door. Like a dog had been kicked after getting into trouble. She didn't quite understand at the time, but her mom had finally explained that dad had fallen in love with some other woman and even knocked her up. He'd shed a few tears that day, told Jo he was sorry and promised to be back, but he wasn't, and he never came back.
It hadn't been easy, just the two of them, but they made it work as best they could. Her Aunt Sarah had been a big help too, taking Jo in when things got rough and when mom went to college. Those four years were the hardest. Jo had basically lived with her Aunt Sarah while her mom went to nursing school. Between classes and work, her mom was hardly home, and Jo was barely keeping herself alive.
She did okay with school but found herself hanging out with the wrong people every now and then, which inevitably made things harder. There were nights where Jo just didn't come home, either with a boyfriend or passed out, drunk with her friends. Whenever mom found out, she'd yell at Jo and tell her how disappointed she was, but then she'd go back to college, and it would start all over again.
Finally, when her mom finished nursing school, Laurie and Jo made a deal to start somewhere new. A little Urgent Care in Colorado made the best offer, and the rest was history. It had hurt to give up the friends she had back in North Carolina. At first Jo wasn't quite sure she'd survive that feeling. The loss had felt way too familiar to that Valentine's Day. They'd only been in Sweetwater for a few days when her mom took her to a psychiatrist and got her meds. But, after a year, she'd settled in. Making new friends wasn't awful, and the rumors of all the crazy happenings around her gave her plenty of other things to think about.
