PERSONALITY
Likes: reading, a good cup of tea first thing in the morning while watching the sunrise, the smell of books, puns, d&d, listening to music with the windows down while she drives, lightning storms, a cozy sweater or t-shirt and jeans, sweet tea Dislikes: pollen & allergy season, the color mauve, seafood, sudden loud noises, know-it-alls, mansplainers Strengths: dedicated, loyal, creative, welcoming Weaknesses: can ramble with the best of them, can be pretty blunt at worst times, a bleeding heart more often than not.
General personality: Emma Lou is a pretty laid-back sort of person. Even though she owns and runs The Nook, she can often be found in a t-shirt and comfy jeans. She likes to talk with anyone that comes in and wants to make them feel at home. She's an out and proud nerd, fully embracing it and does not let it be used as an insult against her. She has a softer tone that she speaks in even though she can be very blunt at the same time. As a person, she is very inclusive and has made sure that is reflected in both her private and public spaces. Emma Lou can have a bit of a bleeding heart, which outside of where she grew up is not always a good thing in the eyes of others but that doesn't mean she'll curb that anytime soon.
HISTORY
Education: Bachelor of Business Administration Years in Sweetwater: 5 all together Family Members: Parents that live in Georgia, third cousins to Kalena Irwin
General History: Emma Lou's mother Lucille Irwin was a business woman who had larger dreams than the bookshop that her father owned so she left Sweetwater for broader horizons and didn't look back until years later. In Georgia, she eventually met one George Woodruff of the Woodruffs of the state (a prominent family in their own right). Being a cousin to the main Irwin family line and also no longer being in Sweetwater, Lucille thrived in the southern state. Especially with the chance to show off the wealth she now had in ways that she couldn't before. And when her daughter was born, she was over the moon.
This was the world that Emma Lou was born into. As the only daughter of Lucille and George, she grew up with a mix of high expectations but also quite a bit of love and support. Her interests were many and varied so there were many family dinners that Emma Lou would ramble on about whatever interest had caught her fancy. However, for all that her interests and hobbies were indulged in, she wasn't overly spoiled and her parents instilled in her the concept of hard-work. from middle-school on, Emma Lou began to show more of an interest in the nerdier side of things. She was a voracious reader, had been introduced to video games by an older cousin and later discovered D&D. She was hooked.
High school saw a major social life change for Emma Lou, though. The name Woodruff suddenly was the most interesting thing about her and everyone wanted to jump on the friendship bandwagon just to say that they were friends with a Woodruff. Her cousins had warned her but she hadn't believed them. The normally bubbly teen began to withdraw, hiding behind her books and her games so that her school mates would just leave her alone. The clubs that she had thought were a safe space away from the pressure slowly morphed into a not so safe space as well and she eventually withdrew from almost all school-related extracurriculars.
The summer she turned 16, Emma Lou's mother got word that her father (Emma Lou's grandfather that she'd met a handful of times) was falling ill and needed help. Eventually it was decided that they would all relocate to Sweetwater for a bit so that Lucille could be there to help her father and George was able to work remotely so the move was no problem for him. Emma Lou was just thankful that moving to the midwest meant that all the clout that came with the Woodruff name in the southeast wouldn't follow her to Colorado. As it was, she ended up finishing out the last two years of high school in Sweetwater and it turned out that her mother and grandfather were part of the Irwin founding family.
Before she left for college, her grandfather sat her down to talk about his bookshop cafe that he owned. Her mother was supposed to have inherited it but she didn't want it since she was returning to Georgia with her husband after Emma Lou started college. So he gave her a choice. Either she could take the shop or it would be put up for sale. Since she'd fallen in love with it in the two years that she'd been in Sweetwater, Emma Lou said yes. She left for college to a business degree with a management specialization and when she graduated, she moved in with her grandfather to learn the ropes before he passed a year later when she was 24.
Ever since, Emma Lou has been the owner of the Nook and has been determined to make a safe space. She even started a weekly D&D night on Tuesdays. (She's also got real sweet tea on the menu, too.)
