She hadn't meant to dive into such heavy conversation from the very beginning but he did make her feel comfortable and she appreciated that about him. She smiled as he spoke about his home, imagining him on sheep farm made her smile. She did catch the 'eh' at the end of his question which lightened the otherwise heavy question.
She gave him a little smile as he mentioned beating up an ex-boyfriend but didn't press. She didn't actually expect him to do anything of the sort, not at this point anyway, they barely knew each other. But it was a nice sentiment anyway. She took another few sips of her coffee while he briefly explained his story about his ex-fiance, a sympathetic expression clear on her face. She only nodded kindly in response, catching on that this wasn't a topic that he wanted to dive into and she had no intention of pressing about it.
She shook herself a bit as he asked about breakfast and smiled. "Absolutely delicious," she replied, "yours?" she'd wait for a reply before she used the opportunity to move on.
She leaned forward towards him a bit, her forearms resting against the table as she smiled. "Okay, tell me something fun about yourself," she was clearly changing the topic and trying to lighten it up. "Do you travel? Have a crazy hobby besides braving infernos on a regular basis?" she asked with a smile and took another bite of her sandwich while he answered.

"Good enough that I am glad I don't stop here every morning or I'd have a problem," he noted, having finished up the first burrito and begun working on the second. He was relieved Valkyrie didn't dig further. It wasn't something he wanted to cover up, but much like her ex-boyfriend, there was only so much he really wanted a stranger to do anything about. Maybe, if this went anywhere, things would be different.
Ferris snorted. "I visit my sister in Vancouver sometimes, but not much travel, no. And not so sure about crazy hobbies," he began, shaking his head slightly. "But I sometimes teach riding lessons at the equestrian center. When the weathers nice." Not exactly something he was doing right now in the cold and snow. "I watch a lot of hockey. And I play some guitar," he said modestly. Put like that, he sounded pretty simple. Not a bad thing, he supposed. "I spend a lot of time at work, helping people with panic attacks in the supermarket, moving broken down cars off the road, plowing snow... Sometimes there's an inferno to brave too, yeah," he added. They did a lot more than just fire control, especially in such a small town. If it wasn't the small police department, it was the firefighters.
"What about you, Valkyrie?" He really liked her name. "Are you musically inclined? Into any sports? Travel?" He tacked the last one on because she had mentioned it herself. New York to Colorado in two years was quite the distance. Though he wasn't sure if that had been home. "Are you from New York?" He asked, tone a bit hesitant.

She laughed when he mentioned this place becoming a problem and nodded in agreement as she went in for another bite. It really was pretty outstanding. Even small towns could shine if they chose to.
She loved listening to Ferris talk about himself. He was clearly very modest but that didn't mean he wasn't interesting. She tried to remember as much as she could so she could refer back to it to later. A little smile lifted her lips at the realization that she quite hoped there would be a 'later' in which she'd want to remember the things she'd learned about him. Good with horses, played guitar, and went about town saving lives and being with people in their worst moments? Ya, he sounded pretty damn incredible she had to admit.
"I've dabbled in a few instruments over the years but I don't practice often." During her many lifetimes she'd learned to play a whole host of music and always picked it up again quickly upon playing again. "I don't mind sports but none that I'm a huge fan of, though watching ice skaters in the Olympics has always been a favorite," she said with a smile. "Too cold for me though, I thrive much more in the summer than in the winter." That was certainly a phoenix thing though she didn't need to bring that up.
"I do like to travel. New York has always been home. My parents often had medical conferences all over the world and I almost always joined them. It's so fascinating to see new places and meet new people with different ideas than your own. I haven't done any traveling since moving here though," she said with a little shrug.

He raised an eyebrow as she mentioned 'instruments' plural, silently asking her to elaborate. Music was always an easy thing to connect to people through. Be that enjoying a song or listing to someone perform or even performing together.
Ferris loved music and he imagined even his low-key mention of playing guitar gave that away. In another life, he followed his passion for guitar and played at bars and back up for shows until he got noticed by someone and because a lead guitarist in some big-name band. Like Hendrix or Clapton, only way less famous. People would jam and cry to one of his songs and never know his name and it sounded perfect. He only regretted his childhood a little.
He nodded. Sprots weren't for everyone. But he could get behind ice skating. "Ever ice skated yourself? Warms you up pretty quick," he noted. He couldn't help it, he liked ice skating. Not figure skating so much but it was still impressive what they could do with a pair of blades. Still, he made a note that she was a summer girl. Her fair complexion and pale hair were brilliant in the winter, but he knew she was just as radiant and more confident in the warmer months. So maybe he'd paid attention for a while.
Another few bits of his burrito and Ferris hummed softly in interest, waiting until she finished and he finished eating. She seemed so passionate about travel only to hear she hadn't for two years. He wondered if that ex had something to do with her being landlocked. "Where was the last place you visited?"

Valkyrie had intentionally not gone into detail about the instruments she could play because knew it would come across as absurd to know so many in only 26 years of life. Still, at his encouragement she couldn't help but give him something to go off of. "I tried guitar for a little while as well as the ukulele, my parents liked the idea of the harp but that didn't last long, too heavy. Violin when I was a kid... I stuck the most to piano and singing." The list was longer, she'd used instruments that no longer existed, but she wouldn't dive into that.
"Actually, now that I think about it, I guess I haven't. I get too stiff in the cold, I don't think I'd be able to do it well," she admitted with a little chuckle and a shrug. It was pretty to watch but being cold quite literally slowed her down. She imagined trying with Ferris there, falling all over the place. It would be embarrassing but an easy way to need his assistance just to stand. Her cheeks pinked slightly at the thought. She hadn't been so bold in a long time, her ex had knocked out the once vibrant and easy going girl and made her someone more timid and unsure of taking risk.
Her fingertips grazed over her lips thoughtfully at his question as she tried to remember. "I think it was a beach to Charleston, South Carolina," she smiled at the memory and all the warmth and sunshine. It had been perfect because it was a girl's trip and her boyfriend hadn't been there. "That was a good trip." She finished her sandwich and wiped her fingers off with a napkin. Rather than leaning back comfortably in her seat though, she leaned further into the table and the conversation. "If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?" she asked.

Hearing her forays into different stringed instruments was fascinating, even with just the little hints. He could very easily picture her with a harp or violin or even a piano. There was something both soft and striking about each instrument that fit her just as her powerfully delicate fingers fit them in return. "Do you miss playing any of them?" He asked since she didn't seem to have a musical outlet at the moment. He was tempted to ask about hearing her sing but decided to file that away for another time.
Ferris smiled. "Lake will probably start to warm up by the time I am free, but maybe next winter I can teach you?" If that wasn't a long-term commitment. Still, it wasn't a hard confirmation. Just an idea between...something more than friends. He avoided suggesting he would keep her warm during it. He meant it as a comfort thing but knew how it would sound. And while he would love to keep her warm...this was a breakfast date. "I bet you would be a lot better than you think," he said helpfully.
He hummed softly in interest. "Never been," He'd visited a lot of the west coast but not the east. But he was more interested in that smile that graced her lips for a moment as she thought about happier times.
Her question caught him entirely unprepared. "Anywhere, eh?" He folded his arms on the table. It wasn't that he didn't loke travel, but that he had always been so...focused. "Is it lame if I say I don't know?" He said. "Maybe my sister's place in Vancouver? To see my niece and nephews," he added with a shrug. "I guess lots of places in France are nice. New Zealand. Japan..." he had never seriously thought about planning a trip to any of those places. Maybe he should.

"I have a piano at home and like to play around when I'm not working. It's a nice way to relax but also find fulfilment, if that makes any sense," she said with a chuckle. "I mostly sing in my car these days but I suppose the one I miss most that I haven't gone to in a while would be..." she tapped her lips with her index finger as she thought about it seriously. "Probably the violin, though I do enjoy it more when combined with other sounds like piano or singing or a whole orchestra," she gave a little shrug. "Maybe I'll have to pull it back out one of these days."
She couldn't exactly tell him that as a phoenix she really did have a harder time in the cold than the average person but she also didn't feel the desire to say so. She was more interested in the way he was planning so far ahead and that she hadn't yet done anything to scare him off from wanting to see her again. "You could teach me?" she asked, a light pink warming her cheeks. "I'd really like that." She could figure out the details another time. Lots of layers would be key. Maybe one of those heated coats. "I'll never know unless I try right?" she asked, her smile never leaving her lips and her grey eyes sparkling as she was enjoying the conversation with him.
She listened to his list of possible placed but mostly found it really endearing that he was more focused on the people he'd travel to see rather than the place itself. Her eyes said so as she fought back the urge to audibly croon at the words. She was tempted to suggest that she show him some of those places but that seemed an even bigger suggestion than ice skating next winter so she held back to urge. "I'm sure you'd love any of them. Depends on what you're looking for in a trip, I suppose." She didn't know enough about him to determine if he was a 'relax on the beach' kind of guy or a 'visit all the historical sites and museums' sort of guy.
She hummed thoughtfully, lacing her fingers together and resting her chin on them as she considered. "Probably Thailand. Gorgeous beaches, the brightest blue water, lots of sunshine, and delicious food too."

Ferris was always impressed by those who could play multiple instruments. Practicing one instrument wasn't too special, but to be a master of it harder, and then to have spent the time and dedication to do that with more than one? Violins, like many stringed instruments, had always fascinated him. Not just in the similarities and differences from guitar, but just in the sound. There was a lot one could do with a violin. and a lot more one could do with an orchestra. "Not sure there's a local orchestra around unfortunately, but maybe you can find something?" Which was pretty rich coming from him, the guy who wanted to be in a band and didn't even go out of his way to play at open mic nights.
Valkyrie echoed his words and Ferris realized maybe that was a bit forward, just assuming she wanted to learn or for him to teach her or that they would be hanging out next winter. "Er, if you want. I'm not..." He trailed off as she said she liked the idea. Which made him feel a bit less weird about it. He'd taught his niece and nephews to ice skate, but never an adult so...maybe this wasn't such a good idea, but he wasn't about to take it back. "Exactly." He found it hard to believe a graceful woman such as herself was so affected by some cold, but hopefully there would be a day that wasn't too far below freezing. "Probably," he agreed. As for what he looked for in a trip... "Not sure. With the farm, we never really went on vacations anywhere. I visited family sometimes," Ferris explained with a shrug. "I know people usually go to theme parks or museums or beaches but..." He only felt a lot awkward explaining he'd never been on a proper vacation. "Even when I do visit my sister, I end up helping her with the kids or something." Not that Ferris knew what the word 'relax' meant on a regular basis either, so this was rather par for the course.
Valkyrie's thinking face was precious. Though he hadn't expected Thailand. "Oh yeah? I do like Thai food," he agreed. It was probably even better there and coupled with the water and beaches, it sounded lovely. "Hopefully you get a chance to visit again." Regardless of any belligerent exs. He took another sip of coffee and then gave up pretending he was interested in the drink.
