It was funny wasn’t it. He knew very few people who were exactly where they thought they would be when they were young. That and it was relieving to know that the local fireman was happy with his job. There was something a bit unsettling about a firefighter with workplace dissatisfaction.
“Well sure, I know my way around a formula” Elrond replied with the sort of not a joke, joke delivery that only a wholesome middle aged man can manage.
He finished out his coffee as Ferris retrieved and put up the smoke detectors. Elrond sort of stood around watching the vague shape of Ferris as he installed them. His mind had turned slightly to thinking of what he should do with his day but it was much the same as the others.
He would check over papers until lunch, then more papers after lunch, audiobook in the evening, and go to bed early.
He really needed a hobby or two…or three.
When Ferris had finished up he was the one waving dismissively. There were things which needed doing but nothing so important as to be a good excuse to keep Ferris.
“No, no I’m sure I’ve used enough of your time.”
He smiled in the direction of the man’s face “Feel free to stop by if you ever feel like chatting about rocketships or another cup of Joe.” He said not actually expecting Ferris to ever take up the offer.
