Growing up, there had been some things Ashley liked about school, but there were more things that she had not liked. She liked learning, reading, writing, and the school library. In elementary school, she liked recess, and in high school, she liked majorettes. She had hated those awful bells, sitting still, the crowds, bullies, and group projects. Before her autism diagnosis, she would sometimes watch the other kids and wonder what was wrong with her.
Some people thought it was weird that she had a master’s degree, despite having not mostly disliked school as a child. She found it odd that people found this odd, both because she was a Hollifield, and because college had been better and she had mostly liked it.
Ashley would never want to work at a school, as her eldest sibling did, but she did like working in the library. She had always loved libraries. There were stories and information everywhere, and everything was neatly organized. Sometimes there was hardly anyone there. Sometimes there were lots of people there, but even then things like obnoxious loud noises and people running around were a rarity.
Of all of the librarians and library technicians, Ashley was probably the one who put books and movies away the most often. Some of the other librarians claimed that putting stuff back on the shelves was tedious, but Ashley loved it. Organizing and making sure everything was in the right place was often fun.
While Ashley was in the ails, putting books away and not really paying enough attention to her surroundings to notice other people around, she came across a paperback book that was older than most. She found where it went, and then she briefly opened the book and held it up close to her nose to smell it, before putting it away. also really liked the smell of books, especially older ones.
