[For @asher]
The final bell for the day had just rung to release the students. As was typical, the halls were instantly rushed with teenagers and the volume level in the halls was loud and obnoxious. Alexis didn't mind one bit.
She was dressed in her cheerleading uniform, her hair up in a high pony as she walked through the halls. This space was her kingdom, the place where she thrived. There was a large part of her that was nervous for life after high school. Here she was Queen. Out there..., well, at least she was part of a Founding Family and still had a name that made her important.
She reached her locker and her foot bumped against a book on the floor. Bending over to pick it up, she got a cat call as she did so. She ignored it and tapped the shoulder of the person nearest the fallen book. "Hey, is this yours?" she asked.
Being the new kid wasn't ever easy, he could remember a few of them from his old school, how awkward they all had seemed, out of place without a single friend to turn too. Somehow, he'd never really thought he'd be that kid, texting the ones back in New York just didn't feel the same when the group chats all consisted of where they were hanging out over the weekend. For Asher it seemed as though they were all getting along fine without his presence, and there he was, stuck in a small town without either of his parents giving a definitive reason for why they'd even moved in the first place.
The moment the bell had rung, he'd made a bee-line for his locker, ignoring a majority of the loud voices that echoed through the halls. He was already in his locker, shoving the books he didn't need to take home and taking out the ones he did when he felt a tap on his shoulder. For a moment he looked at his books, before realizing he had actually dropped the one the girl was holding out. "Yeah, sorry about that," he reached out to take the one she held, only for one of the other books he held to slip from his grasp and fall with a thud to the floor.

"Sure," Alexis said with a smile as he took the book. Thank goodness to have found the owner so quickly. Lucky day. Otherwise she'd have brought it to the main office in the lost and found or something. Though she was sure it probably had a name on the inside of the cover...maybe.
As the second book fell Alexis tried to grab it before it fell but missed. "Whoops!" She bent to pick it up without a second thought but as she did someone's overstuffed backpack pushed against her and she lost her balance, bumping into Asher's legs.
When his other book hit the floor, Asher's hand moved, lifting to pinch the bridge of his nose in mild frustration. Of course he couldn't just take his book and move on, not when he didn't know the girl in front of him. Well, he knew of her, by this point it felt like he knew of most people but didn't actually know them. "Sorry," he repeated, he'd been about to reach down and grab that one himself when she did herself.
"Ah, you don' ha-" his sentence, intending to tell her that she didn't have to get his book, was cut short by someone knocking into her. Asher quickly reached out, trying to steady her as she bumped into his legs, one of his own feet moving back to catch his balance. Instead of telling the other person to watch out like he wanted too, he offered her a awkward smile, "you okay?"

Alexis made a small squeaking sound as she was pushed forward. She almost completely toppled over but Asher managed to steady her enough to keep her from falling. She stood up, forgetting about the second fallen book as she glanced over her shoulder to see who had bumped into her. In the throngs of students around her there was no way for her to make a guess as to who it might have been.
She tossed her ponytail out of her face and turned back to towards Asher when he asked if she was ok. Her cheeks were slightly pink from embarrassment of her almost fall and she returned a small smile. "Ya, I'm fine. Thanks for catching me," she replied.
Asher's eyes flickered from Alexis to where he'd thought the person with the overstuffed bag had gone. Whoever they were, it seemed as though they'd already disappeared into the crowd of students. Once he was sure she was steady, he let his hands fall, grabbing his books and shoving them into his bag. For the moment, he was pointedly ignoring the heat rising in his face, it was already tough being the new kid, let alone losing a book, dropping a book immediately after and then catching a girl he didn't really know. Not that he really knew anyone but that was beside the point.
"Yeah, no problem. Glad you're okay," he offered, his hand gently pushing his locker shut, "and uh, thanks for the help with the book, by the way." With his bag now slung over his shoulder, he turned, taking a small step as he made to head home, but he stopped, his lip snagged between his teeth as he decided to go out on a limb. He hadn't tried very hard yet, not to hardly even introduce himself to anyone, and the school year was nearing the end. So he turned, offering a small smile. "I uh... I'm Asher by the way... new.. ish... Alexis right?" Introductions were the worst.

Alexis offered him a smile and nod when he thanked her. "No problem." As he turned to walk away she had turned to her own locker, lifting a hand to turn the knob, spinning it to each number of her combination. She hadn't gotten far when the boy spoke again and she turned her attention back to him.
Her expression brightened when he said her name. It was a beautiful thing to be recognized and popular. She'd be lying if she said she didn't love it. "That's me," she said as she tucked a stray hair behind her ear. "It's nice to meet you, Asher. You moved in just this year, right?" It was small town, it was nearly impossible not to notice new residents, at least when you had been here for long enough.
It wasn't a surprise when she'd pointed out that he'd just moved in. Small towns were exactly like what everyone said, it seemed as though everyone every knew each other and the moment someone new was in town the news spread like wildfire. As a senior, it didn't make making friends easy, not that he'd exactly tried, but still. He wouldn't even say that he was trying to make a friend now, not when he just assumed that she probably didn't want to hang out with a new kid that sat around with his sketchbook.
But at least he was trying to talk to someone now. It was a step in the right direction, whichever direction that actually was. A small laugh left him, his eyes rolling slightly before he offered a small nod of his head. "That I did. Great time to move right? Senior year..." it was actually the worst time, but there wasn't anything he could do to change it now. He'd already fought it before they'd actually made the move, now that they were there, he was a bit stuck, "nice to meet you too, though."

Alexis made a groaning sound, "Oh my gosh I can't even imagine. I'd have killed my parents if they made me move for senior year," she said with a little chuckle. "Where did you move from?" she asked, turning slightly to open her locker as she started to switch out which books she'd be taking home and which she was keeping here.
Another girl in a cheerleader stepped up beside them. "Hey girl!" she said enthusiastically, her long brown ponytail swaying behind her as she bounced excitedly. "Are you going to Sam's party tonight?" she asked.
Alexis smiled at her friend. "I don't know I haven't decided. Hey, this is Asher," she said, motioning towards him. "Asher, this is Cece."
Cece gave Asher a little wave. "I know you, you're the new kid. Hey! YOU should come to the party too!" Alexis smiled and looked back at Asher. "It'll be a lot of fun, Sam's parties always are."
