Ashley and Jack were having their regularly scheduled dinner together. This evening, it was Ashley’s turn to host. She was serving tilapia, store-bought boiled (but not buttered) potatoes, and a special treat of homegrown carrots. The carrots were weirdly shaped, even after she cut them, but what they looked like was not what mattered.
Since the weather was great out, she set the outdoor table. When she went back inside, she heard Milne meow. He was standing in front of his water dish, which was empty. She checked the food on the stove and filled up her cat’s water bowl. When she set the bowl back down, Milne started lapping it up, and Ashley glanced at the clock. Her brother would be here any minute, and the food was almost done cooking.

Jack was heading to Ashely's late after he had some paperwork to finish up at the school. He had his foot down on the pedal, definitely going faster than speed limit, his hands gripping the steering wheel and he rushed down the road. He knew he should have called her to tell her he would be late but he thought of that too late.
By the time he pulled into the driveway he managed to only be about 10 minutes late. Not bad, not bad. He hurried up to the door and knocked twice before letting himself in. They had been doing these meals for long enough that there was little necessity for the unfamiliarity of knocking and waiting for an answer.
"Hey Ashley, so sorry I'm late," he said, stepping up to her. If she let him he'd place his hands on her shoulders and press a quick peck to her forehead. "It smells amazing in here."

When the food was done, she turned the burners to low instead of turning them off. She didn’t want to serve up until her brother got there, or the food would probably get cold. She picked up her phone, about to call him, when she heard him walk through the door.
Ashley walked up to the door to greet him, and her cat followed. “It’s okay, although I wish you would have called," she said. She smiled at him, gently touching his arm. He was one of the few people who she didn't mind embracing. “Thanks,” she said, when he commented on the smell.
After they greeted each other, she went back into the kitchen, turned the burners off and got the plates ready. She handed Jack a plate. “I thought we’d eat outside tonight,” she said. "The silverware, cups, and water, are already out there."

Shew as right, he should have called. In all honestly he hadn't even thought to. "I know," he replied, glad that she didn't seem all that mad at him at least. He looked down at the cat as he followed her into the kitchen. Jack was more of a dog person but he didn't have anything against cats.
He accepted his plate from her and brought up closer to his face as he inhaled. His stomach rumbled in hunger. He smiled at her suggestion. "Great, it's the perfect night for it." He made his way towards the back door and stepped outside. The spring air was comfortably warm and the air smelled of florals.
He sat down at the table, placing his plate in front of him. "So what have you been up to?"

Since it was starting to get dark outside, Ashley flipped the switch for the back porch light to come on. She walked outside, set her plate down, and sat down. Ashley had set two places at the picnic table, each with a fork and knife, on top of a cloth napkin, and a glass of water. In the middle of the table, there was a pitcher of water.
Ashley took a moment, after Jack asked his question, before she answered. “Well, not much out of the ordinary, although I did harvest my first batch of homegrown carrots the other day. Hopefully they’re better then they look.” She took a bite of her carrots, and they were good.

It really was the perfect night. As much as Jack has enjoyed his time away, there was something comfortable about a spring evening in Sweetwater. It had its charm for sure.
He took a drink of his water, downing half the glass before he turned to his meal. “These carrots?” he asked with a smile before taking a bite and humming his approval. They were pretty dang good.
“Nothing new, same old same old. I have a blind date next week. Could be fun.”

“Yes,” she answered. She tried some, and they were better than most carrots.
“I’d hate that, but you have fun with that.” She smiled, thinking that they were such different people. Ashley did not like meeting new people, and she didn’t like dating. She had only dated one person in her entire life, and it didn’t seem very long ago, but that was years ago.
Ashley had a desire for true love, but it was not something that she had to have. She felt like if there was a true love out there for her, then the universe would make sure they meet each other. If there wasn’t, then so be it. She had always been more of a loner anyway.

Jack chuckled at her comment. "I know you would," he agreed. It was true that this was one of the biggest differences between them. With all of Ashley's 'loner' preferences, Jack thrived in social atmospheres. He loved meeting new people, had a string of casual lovers over his lifetime, and had no issues at all with blind dates. Even ones his parents had set up for him.
"So what are your weekend plans, if I may ask?" he inquired with a smile.

When Ashley was a little girl, she had sometimes wondered if something was wrong with her. One of the reasons she felt that way, was that she was not social. She sometimes liked being with other people, but she usually preferred to be on her own. This was still the case today, except that she had determined long ago that it was not a flaw.
“If the weather’s nice I’ll probably go hiking in the mountains, on Saturday,” she said. She liked going hiking and observing her natural surroundings. She also really liked the view on top of a small mountain. “On Sunday, I’ll probably just stay home and relax.”

Jack ate a few bites while she spoke, nodding in a sign that he was listening. It sounded like a nice weekend, very quiet and relaxing which was definitely right up Ashley's alley.
He shrugged his shoulders at her question. "I'm not sure yet, just seeing where the wind takes me I guess," he said with a little laugh before taking a sip of his drink.

“Well, I suppose that’s a good plan,” she said. She chewed her food, as there was a moment of silence. She tried to think of something to talk about, although she never had been a very good conversationalist.
She saw something, out of the corner of her ear. She turned to look at it, and pointed. “Is it just me, or does that cloud look like a buffalo?”

With an amused expression Jack turned to see where she was pointing and cocked his head to study the cloud. "Ya, it kinda does actually," he said with a soft chuckle.
He turned to look back at Ashley. "Soooo, are you planning to go to the auction this year?" he asked with a little smile.
Post by Ashley Hollifield on May 11, 2021 19:07:22 GMT
“Probably,” she said. “I never really liked going to the auction, but I’m glad we have it and it seems wrong not to go.” She liked how the auction raised important funds for the library and the school, and she kind of enjoyed helping to plan it, but she just did like attending it. It was always crowded, and noisy, and there was just an overwhelming amount of people. She felt bad being annoyed by the number of people, as she knew that the more people the better.
