The day couldn't have been moving more slowly. It was just after lunch, that time when the weight of the heads, induced by the full tummies, bid pubescent high schoolers to set their foreheads onto their desks and snooze rather than listening to their teachers.
Ellis D. had opted to take a science his senior year, not because he particularly liked the subject, but because he could stand it. Astronomy, an elective. As it turned out, college students used it as a mandatory class, so his class was paired with some community college folk.
He was skipping it today.
Rather than walking from the caf to the classroom on the college campus, Ellis D. had decided to hang out in the quad. The nice thing about the college campus was that people milling at any old time of day wasn't an oddity. At the high school he would have been questioned and hassled, but here he was basically ignored.
The young man set his backpack down on the grass and took a seat beside it. The sun was chasing the cold of winter away. He lay on his back, pillowing his head with his hands, and closed his eyes.
Jade wasn't the type to typically the kind of person who skipped class. She might be rebellious against things she didn't think were right or were unfair but she wasn't rebellious just for the sake of it. Her parents worked insanely hard to give her a good life and she wanted to make them proud. Her grades were a big part of that while she was still in high school.
She made her way out of the school not to skip class but because she had to leave early for a dentist appointment. Absence excused and everything. She had left a little early so she wouldn't feel rushed and as she moved through the college quad she spotted a familiar figure laying down on the grass.
She made her way towards Ellis D. and stopped when she reached him, standing above his head and looking at him upside down. "Hey, you ok?" she asked him. Her light purple hair was in low pigtails that hung over her shoulders and she wore a checkered mini skirt in a classic 'school girl' style with a fairly low cut purple top though her tiny boobs made it so that no 'cleavage' was visible.

Ellis D. wasn't going to sleep. This wasn't about sleeping. This was about getting away, about exercising his freedom. He was actually a really good student, naturally sharp in the mind, able to read quickly, process effectively, and regurgitate what he learned. Skipping class today wasn't an indication of his grades or who he was...it was just what he had wanted to do. So he did. He seldom gave himself that kind of liberty.
The unfamiliar voice questioning him had his eyelids flying open, and whether he wanted to or not, the mini skirt coupled with where she was standing gave Ellis D. a straight shot view of what was hiding under the checkers. He didn't stare. His eyes moved to her face and he sat up, depriving himself of further glances at the view. A good chap he was.
"Yeah, yeah, hey, I'm good." He said dismissively, waving his hand, making sure she could see that he really was okay and nothing was the matter. She was familiar, they'd had some classes together, but he knew she wasn't a senior. And,
Jade didn't twice about the where she had been standing in relation to what he could or couldn't see. She wasn't shy about her sexuality though if he had responded in any sort of misogynistic way then she would have had words. He would have caught a glimpse of a pair of simple cotton purple panties that matched the color of her shirt and similar to the color of her hair. Today was a matchy matchy day.
"Oh good," she said with a smile and a small bounce of her heels, her hands wrapped around the straps of her backpack. She had thought he might have been upset about something which was why he wasn't in class or anything. Jade knew who he was. The hottie upperclassman who had been dating the popular cheerleader, he was pretty hard to miss.
She grinned and flipped one of her pigtails with the back of her hand at his comment. "Oh thanks!" she said happily. "Got a case of senioritis?" she asked, in reference to him not being in class right now.

Ellis D. smirked at the way she flipped her pigtail, learning something new about this girl he didn’t quite know yet. He quickly concluded that she was fun. Reminded him of Ida. That would either mean the two would hit it off well or be mortal enemies. Ida could be territorial...
“Most definitely.” He confirmed with a head nod, then he used his chin to gesture towards her bag. “How about you? Caught it early?”
It was not uncommon for seniors to start to check out around this time of year. There was probably some scientific research on it somewhere and for a second Jade considered that she should look it up just to see. She'd probably forget to do so by the time they finished with this conversation though.
She imagined that in the coming weeks and months that more and more seniors would have empty desks in classrooms periodically as they just checked out. She hiked her bag a little higher on her shoulders as he gestured towards it and questioned her, chuckling. "Not quite. I have a dentist appointment. Boo," she said, wrinkling up her nose and sticking out her tongue.

The dentist. Ellis D. hadn’t been since he was 8. Dental insurance was a luxury his family couldn’t afford.
“Oh, good. Good luck...I guess?” That probably wasn’t what people said to someone going to the dentist, but it worked. It was nice of her to stop and check on him and all, but clearly she had somewhere to be.
Jade smiled, "Thanks, I'm gonna need it." She gave him a twiddling wave of her fingers and started to step away. She really should go if she didn't want to be late to her appointment. "Enjoy your senioritis," she offered enthusiastically with a grin before she walked away with a little hop in her step.

Ellis D. didn’t say anything else. He just smiled at the girl and watched her leave. The watching wasn’t a creepy observation of her sex’s appealing curves—though he inevitably noticed them—but instead a lingering contemplation of their exchange.
He’d lay back down after some beats and let his eyelids slip closed again.
